I'm so sorry! She was the sweetest character.

The rolls that accompany the principal rib are nothing more than the shavings produced by the hand of the carpenter to clear the rib at the middle. A common take on the crockets of Gothic gables and pinnacles was as an imitation of foliage.

Viollet-le-Duc offers another idea in the entry on corbels in his Dictionnaire Raisonné: the translation of wood forms into stone forms of building, in this case the curled shavings made by the chisel.
