Tommy M. McGuire (Not that one. Nor that one.) Coding bum, tetrapod. (he/him) Bitterly cynical misanthrope. It's always more complicated. I apologize in advance; I tend to get too comfortable. Called 'weird' by Kevin Kruse.

My photo shows a translucent amber coloured glass bowl with vertical rib decoration around the body with marvered white glass trails. The glass bowl glows in the display lighting as if it contains sunshine which reflects on the surface of the display case. Dimensions: Diameter 9.50 cm x Height 6 cm. On display at the British Museum.

Dazzling 2,000 year-old Roman bowl made of translucent amber-coloured glass.

Like a bowl full of sunshine! β˜€οΈ

Fabulous example of the skill of ancient glassmakers!

Ravenna (as @judithherrin.bsky.social tells us in her brilliant _Ravenna_) was bustling in late antiquity. And now that Salvatore Cosentino’s splendid edited volume on artisans and craftsmanship in the late Roman city is open access? You can read about it even more. βš’οΈ uplopen.com/books/e/10.1...

Today we had a short voyage from Vernon to Les Andelys below spectacular ChΓ’teau Gaillard. We passed Le Goulet, where in a charter of 1006 the abbot of Saint-Ouen de Rouen granted Drogo permission to build two new mills in the port called β€˜Orgul’ (Scripta 1446). #Saga25 #MedievalSky 1/

Here we see the true purpose of aircraft tray tables: the latch as a knitting pattern holder.

🧡Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (4?) is waiting for a cheese toastie to be made while roaring what can only be an ancient summoning spell.
It goes: "Melted CHEEEESE! Melted CHEEESE. CHEEESE! In. My. TUMMMYYY! CHEESE!"
A toastie appears.
Her work here is done. (1)

Today I learnt that a German complained that Cyberpunk 2077 used the wrong manhole standardisation. It's beautiful.

"C'mon, of all the bugs, this is the worst! There may be some canon reason why German manhol covers are used in Night City. But, please. DIN B125 is only approved for pedestrian walkways. On roads, it should be a Begu D400 to support the weight!"

Frankly it's a shame that they made cyberpunk 2077 unplayable

French text, reading in English:

…rolls reproduce the shavings made by the carpenter… The workman will remove with his adze a series of thin chips so as not to split the timber; then he will cut off those at their base, if he wants to entirely clear the bracket. Seeing that these chips form an ornament, he had the primitive idea to not cut them off. Later, that ornament was carved in stone. In this manner, most of that architectural ornament which does not imitate vegetation originates in the means of execution.

A common take on the crockets of Gothic gables and pinnacles was as an imitation of foliage.

Viollet-le-Duc offers another idea in the entry on corbels in his Dictionnaire RaisonnΓ©: the translation of wood forms into stone forms of building, in this case the curled shavings made by the chisel.
