I loved drawing birds as a kid, but definitely not an ornithologist, either. The beak, head, and neck are what I focused on - stork heads are “scaly” and without plumage, and the beak has a bit of curve to it. Herons have feathers on their head, with the dark stripe over the eye and a straight beak.
