Trump’s Unforgivable Sin Voters have proved willing to tolerate corruption, but there’s one thing they won’t ignore.

"Americans already understood Trump to be corrupt, and proved themselves willing to tolerate that. But now they are coming to believe that he is inept. In American politics, that is an unforgivable sin."

Sean Sublette - Meteorologist for Congress: Welcome to Virginia
YouTube video by Sean Sublette Sean Sublette - Meteorologist for Congress: Welcome to Virginia

This is an unprecedented time in our nation's history.

Conspiracies, lies, and gaslighting are running amok.

We need more scientists in Congress.

I was born and raised here, and I am running to represent all Virginians from Chesterfield County to the Chesapeake Bay.

The DeSantis administration has not made public a list of names of the immigrants held at the facility in heavy duty tents at an airstrip in the Florida Everglades.
Individuals sent to the makeshift detention center do not show up in an
online government database that allows the public to search for immigrant detainees' whereabouts. Lawyers say they
have had difficulty locating clients sent to the site, often learning that they are there when detainees call family members.

An enforced disappearance is considered to be the arrest, detention, abduction or any other form of deprivation of liberty by agents of the State or by persons or groups of persons acting with the authorization, support or acquiescence of the State, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared person, which place such a person outside the protection of the law (Article 2 of the ICPED and Preamble of the Declaration on the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance)
It is characterized by three cumulative elements (defined in A/HRC/16/48/Add.3):
1. Deprivation of liberty against the will of the person;
2. Involvement of government officials, at least by acquiescence;
3. Refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared
person.

Florida is committing "enforced disappearance," a very serious violation of international human rights law.

I mean insurance companies are the ones with the incentive to be honest about disaster risk and not succumb to β€œappeals” like this, but when they actually try to enforce the commensurate price, people get outraged

This isn’t really a partisan thing and it probably makes me more mad than any of the other TX flooding stuff.

We are just far too accommodating of people in denial about reality.

This is such a critical point that can be tough to make without seeming to minimize the current disaster. This event had a very high death toll for a U.S. disaster and the impacts are severe but in terms of total number of people directly affected and the geographic scope, it’s on the smaller size.

people are making fun of this guy, but the challenge is legit. getting people to take weather alerts seriously is a real problem, and if you send out too many warnings, people will ignore them. of course, it looks awful here but I am sympathetic to the conundrum.

this tail event - 10-15" of rain in the upper Guadaloupe basin in 12-24hrs - was explicitly forecast by several high res models leading up to the event! I dont think it was literally impossible to forecast

07.07.2025 14:51 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Trying to figure out how to get (excellent quality) forecasts/warnings the last mile is tough, complicated, nuanced work without any easy scapegoat or fix.

But once you burn enough tools to prevent the high-quality forecast, this kind of tragedy is going to happen way more often

They are simply not up to the task of defending the constitution and the people of this country. I haven’t gone this far yet on this, but I’m done. They have taken an oath and a responsibility and they’re willfully, even joyfully abdicating it.

Hurricane Science Was Great While It Lasted The U.S. is hacking away at support for state-of-the-art forecasting.

It is so hard to describe how sad I am to watch so much get blown up for the sake of the grievances harbored by so few.

To all my Republican friends and family, if you want a forecast for a hurricane from now on, you’re on your own. You burned the tools I needed

This is maybe the first weather data loss that I can say will, without any doubt at all, kill people.

This is some of the core data we use to diagnose rapid intensification when visible satellite and/or hurricane hunter data isn’t available.

Anyone on/near the coast just got a lot less safe
