I think about Xenogears, Shadow Hearts, and Planescape: Torment a lot. So I'd recommend those series. I did not see anyone else talking about them and I hadn't seen them on your stream yet!

Did yours recommend trying things out in the Friendsgiving mode instead? I told mine I wanted to win Family PVP and then she wrote down A LOT of words.

That doesn't seem like a satisfying roguelike at all if you end all runs the same way. I am glad you had some fun at least.

Master of Magic was fun when I played it but I never understood it. It seemed so system dense when I was a kid. I think games like Disciples carried the torch for a little bit. I remember liking Disciples 2 quite a bit.

I got a lot out of SC2 even after a friend spoiled it for me. I don't know if the arcade style combat is for everyone but the AI pilots of some ships are pretty good. I did fumble blindly for two big attempts when I was young and then finished the game during college when I learned it was freeware.

A quick internal poll of my favorite DOS games:
Fallout 1 or 2,
Star Control 2
Master of Orion 2,
X-COM UFO Defense,
X-COM Apocalypse

I think I only played Star Control 2 on a DOS machine and had to look up if the others even counted. I think you'd like MOO2 or the Fallout games the most.

Planescape: Torment. I can recall the scene where you recover memories of your first incarnation, and it was enough to make me tear up years after. You don't get specifics, but your character does. "...and you know, now, there is very little you cannot do."
