The online safety act btw is a transparent farce to censor queer people internet wide.

To access Bluesky (and whatever other entities take this free route to ticking the age verification compliance box) we will have to agree to Epic Games's sytem getting the following data: Your email address a unique ID number some, "but never all", of the following information: your name, date of birth, mailing address, credit or debit card information, a personal identity number (such as a CPF number in Brazil, a CURP number in Mexico, certain digits of a RRN number or i-PIN in the Republic of Korea, and certain digits of a US social security number in the US), a cell phone number, an identity document or face scan." (uh...emphasis added) "we automatically collect information about your devices (computers, phones, tablets etc.) and your use of and interactions with KWS, including in order to identify your country and language" Device information, which includes "data about the operating systems and hardware and software versions, device identifiers, internet protocol (IP) address, login data, browser type and version, time zone setting, country and language, browser plug-in types and versions" Usage information, which includes site navigation... the actions you take, the time, frequency and duration of your activities (UH....emphasis absolutely added) your child’s age or date of birth. your child’s country (and in the US, State) and language.

Because the Online Safety Act was never intended to address misinformation, it was intended to censor private citizens...

this isn't "age" verification it's "We need your legal identity tied here, so if you say anything negative about what the government is doing, we can punish you for it."

Removing your privacy makes it a lot easier for people to silence you.

there is also a reason why it's rushing out the door NOW when a large amount of people requesting aid in gaza, criticising the british government's thirst for genocide are on bsky and the government is trying to crack down on people pointing out anything to do with it.

There's a *reason* it's only coming into full force amidst a wave of hard-right leaning policies that curb trans people's access to public spaces.

The UK online safety act has never been and will never be about protecting kids. If it was, youtube would not be the cesspit it is.

@bsky.app is entrusting a company which has a history of violating privacy and collecting data without permission with people's identities...

They should be fighting this act, not caving to it...

Bluesky is rolling out age verification in the UK Bluesky users in the UK can verify their age using their face, ID, or payment card.

Starting July 25, Bluesky will require users in the UK to scan their face, upload an ID or verify their identity with a bankcard.

I realize that platforms feel they have no choice but to comply with the government surveillance schemes, but shocking nonetheless.

And of fucking course they're using Epic Games to do the verification... A company which is known for violating privacy and allowing crypto/NFT bullshit on their platforms...
