If anyone has any evidence that folks doing the kind of activism and observing that Pretti and Good were doing when killed were inspired by *elected officials,* I'd love to see it.

Because from my reporting in Minneapolis, exactly zero people cited elected officials as inspiration.

I think a key distinction is labor cost β€” the costs of LLMs are currently hidden from most users bc the firms are losing money while competing for users. Once a monopoly is cemented, prices will go up and I’m not sure all firms will find LLMs are β€œcheaper”

Pam Bondi loves dogs. Always had them, one after another. She got involved with dog shelters and dog rescue, and once pulled off to the side of a busy road and got out of her car to chase down a stray. Another dog she helped was a Saint Bernard named Master Tank. She adopted him from a shelter after he was lost during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, not long after her own Saint Bernard had died. The story has been told but bears repeating. Master Tank belonged to Steve and Dorreen Couture and their grandson, who was 4, recovering from the murder-suicide of his parents and losing his dog during the storm. Bondi said the dog was a β€œwalking skeleton” and β€œdying from heartworms” when she adopted him. The Coutures eventually tracked down Master Tank, but instead of giving him back, Bondi hired a lawyer, who accused the Coutures of abusing the dog, which Bondi had renamed Noah. β€œShe lied,” Dorreen told a Palm Beach Post columnist years later. β€œMy little grandson begged her to take the dog home, and she refused. She thought she would just wear us down. That we were unstable people and would just quit.” The case was settled out of court, with Bondi securing visitation rights, but she never did visit. She got another dog.

Hi y’all. El Paso City Councilmember here but also fellow avgeek. Not a usual sub for me, but here we are. We’re all trying to work out why this crazy NOTAM was issued. What I know so far (as of midnight zero six local Wednesday):

β€’ It isn’t a typo or an error. FAA issued this NOTAM intentionally as written.

β€’ Nobody local got advance notice. And I mean nobody β€” neither civilian nor military leadership.

β€’ Military does not have carte blanche exemption. Army is fretting about their flights tomorrow just as much as everyone else.

β€’ Albuquerque Center did not get advance notice.

You're right to a large extent, though I think Carnley is right, the U.S. is probably over as the single hegemon in the world--our role will most likely be among the other wealthy countries, competing for recognition & advantage. ...unless we continue on Trump's way...

Many people don't realize that you don't own any of the ebooks you "buy" on Kindle - it's merely a license that they can modify or delete at will. Any publisher who wants their books made available on Amazon can't make special discounts available to any store unless Amazon get the same deal.

Bezos has from the beginning hated books, libraries and the publishing industry. The "Amazon Bookstore" where he started was a test case in how far he could go in predatory practices in impoverishing booksellers and making it harder for libraries to function.

We consistently overestimated the virtue and underestimated the cynicism of the "tech billionaires"--the most self-interested assholes this planet has produced. As a librarian, I've known for over 20 years that Jeff Bezos is a monster. +

Most of the ones who retired REALLY don't want to be involved in an illegitimate coup d'etat. That's a big reason that Republicans retire from the House, they have no stomach for it.
