Guild member detained by ICE in Minnesota January 16, 2026 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dylan Manshack, Comms | dmanshack@cwa-union.org | 202-445-4033 Member remains in ICE custody in Texas MINNEAPOLIS β On Friday, January 9, ICE arrested a member of our union, the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild, TNG-CWA Local 37002, as part of Operation Metro Surge. While the circumstances of his arrest are not clear, we know he has been transferred to an ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, where he is awaiting action on his petition for habeas corpus. The Guild is not publicly identifying the member out of concern for his familyβs safety, but he is a father, a husband, and a staff member at a Minneapolis non-profit organization. He is a steward in our union and an advocate for all workers. And he is one of dozens of Minnesota union members who have been detained in recent weeks. The Department of Homeland Security says it has made more than 2,000 arrests since the surge began in December, according to an MPR News report. But the agency has not provided details about the people arrested, such as how many were charged with a crime, how many face deportation, and how many were subsequently released. βThe Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild stands with our member and his family as they face an uncertainty that is all too common in our state right now,β local president Nick Woltman said. βLike all Minnesota workers, our members deserve to feel safe in their communities both on and off the job.β βThe detention of a Guild member in Minnesota amidst the chaos created by DHS is heartbreaking and infuriating,β said NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss. βMy heart goes out to his family, who are now without their father and husband. As a union, we commit to fight for each other as stewards of our communitiesβespecially in times as dark as this, while federal agents continue to target working families.β ALT TEXT CONTINUED IN NEXT POST

Screenshot of headline from Daily Northwestern: 'Get the f-k out of our cities': Community members hold vigil to honor Minnesota woman killed by ICE Quoted copy reads: Abughazaleh told The Daily she had cried five times since learning of the shooting. "It was a mom that just dropped her kid off at school," Abughazaleh said. "Her wife saw her get shot in the head. She had stuffed animals in her glove box and a dog in her car." She then called for the abolition of ICE and DHS and for prosecuting federal immigration agents. "Get the fβk out of our cities," Abughazaleh said. "You're not wanted here. And as soon as we possibly can, we're not just abolishing ICE β we're holding all of you to account."
Headline screenshot of Evanston RoundTable: Protesters gather to condemn fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Quoted copy reads: Candidate Kat Abughazaleh said if she were in Congress, she would be launching an investigation into the shooting and dismantle the Department of Homeland Security. "So many of us, including myself, have seen firsthand the brutality that ICE enacts in our communities," she said. "ICE has already shot people in broad daylight, killed people in broad daylight. Shooting a mother in the head ... isn't a surprise, but it still hurts. It still knocks the breath out of your chest."
This is the issue of our time. How we respond to Trumpβs secret police will define our future for generations.
Our community is stronger than any masked henchmen.
ICE: Get the fuck out of Illinois.
Better yet, disestablish all of DHS, and undo the nightmarish idiocies that we created in a panic 25 years ago. Reestablish the INS, get rid of ODNI, fix the damage from the Patriot Act, etc.
