At the risk of pedantry: I always understood the "pluribus" to mean solely the 13 colonies or states. Is your ascribing it to the Founders as being about people historically accurate? I know its been used that way for a long time but don't know when that idea started.

You suggested that the northern Founders arguing for slaves not to be counted for representation was because they bought into the idea that they weren't people. While probably true for a few, I don't think that holds for the majority of those who took that position at that time.

"But when the right to vote ... is denied ... the basis of representation therein shall be reduced." Section 2 was designed to ensure that former slaves received voting rights because the South would otherwise lose congressional power.
