its semi-unofficial research (it can be used in projects but it isn't for anything currently) and we're all fairly young, its mostly just for experience so we get to have some low stress field work

I guide a group for research now its so fun, its just six of us looking at creatures in the swamp

“De-extinction” is to biodiversity loss what “Mars colonization” is to climate change—wishful thinking that is at its core impossible but nevertheless sucks up attention and resources from actual solutions to these crises (which, ultimately, might be the whole point)

i also observed some double crested cormorants basking in the sun

today i watched an eagle catch and eat a fish. many gulls flitted around it but i think a great blue heron ended up poking at the remains of the fish after the eagle flew away, which i didn't know they did. the heron seemed pissed off though i saw that one flying around a lot.

sorry for posting about birds a lot. i am still sick and busy with many other things irl but i go birding every sunday at the minimum so i just. put a mask and a hat on and tried to avoid people. i don't have a cold or virus actually at all. but just in case.

there was also a pileated woodpecker deeper into the woods and some crows that were very talkative.

one of the long-dead marsh trees is popular with the swallows in the late summer but they have moved on now thats its fall unfortunately. they're some of my favorite birds to sit and watch.

saw many beautiful birds today including an osprey, three eagles, a whole flock of ducks hanging out with a gaggle of geese, a gulp of cormorants (i just learned this one), a killdeer, and many little songbirds. also there was a group of otters and i saw a beaver dam too.
