I think this is largely due to the right's success making 'political' a toxic term. 'Political' is a lot like 'elite' or 'politically correct,' terms only used in opposition and never self-applied. Hard to defend the necessity of doing politics when it's only something other people do!

There's so much discourse right now about how right wing messaging reaches so many people, but it's really a bit more subtle than that. It's just not good enough for electeds on the left to say that they "disagreed with" Kirk's views. Saying gay people should be stoned to death and that air disasters are caused by Black pilots--these are not political disagreements. They are attacks on the basic humanity of our fellow human beings.
