I think it’s important for those of us that study this to keep SHOUTING that the 45/47 presidency is a complete and total failure of for profit journalism. If news is a public good necessary to the survival of a democratic society we’ve got to pay for it the same way we pay for roads and hospitals.

Because they are for-profit ventures that, no matter who they hire to do the journalism, are owned and operated by the rich and powerful who ultimately share more ties to their economic peers than they do to any political or moral creed. Publicly funded news media is our only hope of a way forward.

I think in many ways to understand our current moment we need an update to Weber’s “The Protestant Ethic” to something like “The Prosperity Gospel and the Spirit of Capitalism.” Whatever the redeeming qualities of Protestantism were, they’re long gone
