Truth bomb 👇: Traffic lights exist for cars, not for people walking or cycling. Before cars, we didn’t need them. Only when intersections became controlled and no communication was necessary could high speeds exist without chaos. We traded human interaction for convenience for motorists and danger.

I rarely commuted by car because I hated it so much. It turned me into a monster. At least cycling I could let off the steam. #carbrain I suppose. 🤬

The LCWIP changes that but still the 1991 design guide is being applied to new developments so that road traffic is prioritised at newly-created crossings.

Road/redway crossings are either road-priority at-grade (give way markings on the redway) or the redway is diverted under or over the road. Virtually everywhere the pedestrian and cyclist is required to climb, sometimes quite steeply, so that the motorist is not inconvenienced.

I don’t know but it must be global.

There’s a section on one of my local routes that, according to Strava, reaches 17%, or 1 in 6. Nowhere I know of on the roads gets anything like that steep.

Milton Keynes, heading the charge in the war on motorists. People really do seem to think that car parks are free, empty space that would become a wasteland if it weren’t used to store their ‘pride and joy’.

The redway system extends hardly at all into the legacy built environment where there remains almost no provision for cycling. ‘Retrofitting’ was identified as a key issue in the LCWIP, which identified almost 300 schemes for improvement. The vast majority are categorised as ‘missing links’.

Since they’re officially footpaths shared with cyclists, the Council does not follow the design guidance for cycleways (LTN1/20). Also the redway design guide was revised in 2018 but not adopted so the 1991 design guide is still being followed.

We were also told that gas was the cleaner, healthier alternative. Look where that got us.
