Fellow academics, any advice on how best to apply for humanities grants for starting new projects on a sabbatical? Like from scratch.

I once heard, seemingly erroneously, that Marcion invented the term “Old Testament.” Perhaps they meant well. Apparently it was coined by Melito of Sardis. Who knew? (I guess people who have read Eusebius closely.)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my feed is not Roman Catholic enough to have notified me that this meme will be relevant again.

Remembering the text poorly is a huge downside for me. Like, usually if I find something life changing I can go back to a physical book and find it no problem. I can place a) which side of the “page” it’s on, b) what line-level it was at on the page, and c) roughly where in the book that page is.

In many ways a pdf on my tablet is much better because it mimics a real book.

Does anybody else have too loose a sense of pagination while reading an ebook?

For example, if I am reading a printed book I have a better sense of how much I’ve read or how fast; whereas while reading an electronic book all I’ve got to go on is the percentage of the book I’ve read.

4. Repost sparingly, but do not neglect it.
5. Reply to everyone, especially mutuals, unless it falls into a category listed in number 3.
6. Don't live online, but show up every once in a while if it gives you any kind of encouragement.

My unsolicited advice for text-based social media:

1. Post good, true, and beautiful things.
2. 'Like' good-natured replies, even if you disagree with them, especially if they are from a mutual.
3. No obligation to 'like' foul, malicious, or trolling material (people looking to fight).

The ontological unity of humanity is such that every separate individual overcoming evil in himself inflicts such a defeat on cosmic evil that its consequences have a beneficial effect on the destinies of the whole world. — Elder St. Sophrony

I'm writing a thing, and I am convinced it is patently bad. Like, I've even had one person say it's great. But I just can't manage to bring it full circle with a good conclusion, and I currently hate working on it. Send help.

"God is incomprehensible, and incapable of being measured. For whatever be the knowledge which we are able to obtain of God, either by perception or reflection, we must of necessity believe that God is by many degrees far better than what we perceive God to be."
