β€œYou're not alone in wanting a better world, one in which cars are relegated to their proper use. Cars are tools that can be useful at certain times and places. They’re not gods. They’re not the foundation of our society. They should serve us. We should not serve them. There can be life after cars.”

Locally we have the problem of segregated paths being opposed / inadequately lit because they *may* disrupt nocturnal animals. I'll take that objection seriously when the same specialists also actively object to the death & disruption of myriad species by road traffic at all times... #traffication

Drivers having to push β€œbeg buttons” to have the lights change, rather than pedestrians.

Drivers having to push β€œbeg buttons” to have the lights change, rather than pedestrians.

Our values & priorities are revealed in thousands of small but important details in our city design, deliberate decisions that have prioritized cars over people for decades. It will take equally deliberate decisions to change to cities for people. HT Dutch cartoon by Verwey, 1980

Between 2012 and 2020, if you were a pedestrian on a pavement in the UK, you were over 100 times more likely to be killed by a motorist than by a cyclist.

Wheely Great Wednesday - supporting the next cycling superstar! 🌟
In July we were gifted a Raleigh Equipe track bike. These bikes are a bit special, designed for use on a velodrome with a fixed gear and no brakes, this bike needed a different sort of next life to most of our pre-loved bikes. 1/3

Bike lanes are a sound public health investment Every $1,300 New York City invested in building bike lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to one additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.

Really interesting research from New York regarding the quantitative impact of bike lanes on public health

The cover illustration of the December 19, 1942 New Yorker. A woman, jauntily attired in cat-eye sunglasses, a stocking cap, flowing white scarf and red sweater rides a bicycle towards the observer, a recently-purchased christmas tree balanced on the front basket of her bike. A black scottie dog runs along at her side. Behind her on the road, the rural farm house where she purchased her tree, with a sign for cider for sale and bushels of apple at the front. It is snowing lightly, and there are no cars on the road, and only two figure -- perhaps another woman shopper talking to the tree sales person -- stand in the background. The title, date, and price of the magazine are at the top. The predominant colors are green and red over the gray of the road and off-white snow, with pastels of the farmstead highlighting. The mood is of independence, self-reliance, and stubborn holiday cheer persisting in any circumstance.

It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the December 19, 1942 cover of The New Yorker, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions. Gas and tire rationing had begun that year. #bikesky

A graph titled "Cost of Transport" showing the relationship between body weight (in kilograms) and energy consumption for distance traveled (calories per gram per kilometer) for various animals and machines. It highlights that a person on a bicycle ranks first in efficiency.

A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic.
