One thing that was helpful to me was seeing that racism is a spectrum and not a binary. You can still be racist if you don’t belong to the Klan and use the N word. You can work on being closer to the good end of the spectrum.

Epstein was not ostracised for his crimes. To some powerful men, he became even more appealing | Moira Donegan The latest tranche of files expose how he was viewed as a sexual svengali – and an expert on dodging the #MeToo movement, says Guardian US columnist Moira Donegan

I wrote about the powerful men who sought out Jeffrey Epstein for dating advice and went to him to help navigate their own sexual misconduct scandals after his 2008 conviction on child sex abuse charges.

society in general needs to learn how to be wrong again.

like... nobody can accept when someone points out what's wrong with their opinions. nobody can accept when the politician they're supporting does something bad. no one can admit they made a mistake.

they always have to be right.

Here is a thing:

There were several years when I was one of VERY few journalists seriously covering harassment and abuse issues in comics (and by extension sometimes video games). During that time, I became the Person People Told Things To.

One thing I deeply appreciate about AMADEUS is it's one of the few films that accurately depicts the creative process (being clammy, pale, and sitting in your bed).

We have not had a normal nomination process since 2008. People are pissed after multiple cycles of not holding white collar criminals accountable for even an armed insurrection against the country. Our someone up promising Nuremberg trials and people will vote for them.

2024: It’s clear the oligarchs are rigging the election for Trump and Biden can’t win, so he pulls out at the last minute and shoves Harris in front of the trolley. He additionally saddles her with his losing team and strategy to make sure she fails.

2008: Hillary thinks the nomination was stolen from her.
2016: Everyone colluded to clear the decks so only Hillary could get the nomination.
2020: Everyone was terrified of another Trump election so they chose a bland unobjectionable placeholder candidate.

I asked a lefty in 2024 who they wanted and they refused to answer me. They said anyone that they would find acceptable would be unelectable. They were pretty condescending about it too. πŸ˜’

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.

When I was a journalism major I wanted to do radio but we only had TV news in our department. I would be dragged from outside in the rain and shoved in front of the camera out of breath and sopping wet for my audition and then be told they were going with the Ken doll in my class instead. πŸ˜‘

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women β€” and interactions with them β€” through the lens of sex

I know this is a profoundly unoriginal take, but this is why Shakespeare is still awesome: the times change, but people don’t. When performed, rather than read, his work is a portal demonstrating the unity of humanity across time and space. There is comfort and tragedy in that reality.
