learned recently that the guy who wrote "The Night Before Christmas," clement clarke moore, also wrote a takedown of thomas jefferson's proto-scientific racism in "Notes on the State of Virginia," basically accusing him and others of making it up to justify slavery. which, that's right.

My not-New-Year pledge is to let myself be bored more. As Kaleb Horton said, "It turns out boredom is the Cadillac of feelings."

I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like dedicated your life to writing some of the most incredibly written articles in the history of the internet, only to then be told that you no longer have a job because the publication you used to work for got sold off to a soulless hedge fund.

No one deserves to have missed a FG in each of the first four games more than Harrison Butker.

Thrilled for him.

My new aesthetic is the guy from the cover of Jethro Tull’s Aqualung. Partly because of the state of the world, and and partly because AARON RODGERS continues to play football.

Too bad Rodgers is anti-vaxx instead of anti-sacks.

I like Jimmy Kimmel. I really do. I have no issues with him.

I'm talking about something very different.

Kimmel was only suspended. But he's back now. Karen Attiah and all the other Black journalists are still fired.

Y'all do know how to fight, when you want to.

But you don't really want to. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Horror can be cathartic. Horror can be subversive. It can help us understand the human experience. It can help us shine a light on beliefs and norms and systems that cause people pain. It can help us find strength. It can expand our consciousness. Horror can be so many things.

This is just a brilliant piece of writing. I often find myself defending my appreciation for football because I feel it’s tied to some of my most intimate and important cultural and family rituals. You evoked all of this and articulated it perfectly. I cried. My husband cried. Thank you.

Otter interpreting "Clair de Lune" as "cloudy loon". Clair de Lune is the third movement from Debussy's Suite Bergamasque. I briefly amused myself by imagining Otter had transcribed that as "sweet burger mask"

Even more insidious than "free lunch", this "free cheese will get your head smashed in from a mousetrap" frame is a cute way of reformulating the age-old reactionary claim that collective public goods (education, libraries, roads, health initiatives etc.) inevitably lead to evil communist tyranny.
