Bad. But don’t call them 2026 Olympics. They’re just minority winter games for that small minority of cold countries that have snow.

I couldn’t agree more about Russia. Reference to D-K effect was just a crude description of someone being with low ability in one area (European history) being overconfident about their knowledge/abilities. Which I felt justified in this case because it was stated as if obvious to all.

There is a problem among some Latvians but it’s not relevant to the point I made.

Excellent but spoiled by this: β€œI guess you could say Latvia was a little antisemitic-leaning during the war.” To denigrate Latvia & Latvians as the epitome of anti-semitism reeks of arrogant Dunning-Krugerism or Chomskyite predilection for Russian tropes about Balts & Ukrainians being anti-Semitic.

A good step might be for community organisations to start a consumer boycott- publicised protests with Blood on their Hands posters outside petrol stations, starting with the most blatant offenders. Shell?

No, but the Vichy regime certainly had ideological traits in common with Trumpism and MAGA.

You didn’t fight a king in 1776. You fought a British government elected by the Parliament which was only a bit less representative than the US Congress elected in 1789 - 2-3% vs 5-6%.

Particularly useful material to remind Americans of their early history (and Britain’s, and other constitutional monarchies’) when they raise the silly if well meaning No Kings slogan.

A coup is not a revolution. Especially when it leads to an election that you can’t control with any certainty.

Like Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Greece, Japan and Scandinavia? All with lower incarceration rates than China.

Not exactly working to protectβ€œ Christians per se but USAID did fund significant local programs in Nigeria designed to build interfaith dialogue and peace building. Not the sort of thing that has much traction with Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, however.

Get serious. Read it carefully - Kerr saying the Queen approved is strong evidence that she did? The case for a republic is far stronger than this embarrassing clutching at straws.

β€œNature connectedness is a psychological concept that measures the closeness of an individual’s relationship with other species.” If you’re going to write about such things, you might want to explain it a bit better. Having lived in both Britain and Nigeria I have no idea what you’re getting at.

I believe those guys started with the Reichstag fire, state of emergency and suspension of civil liberties, violent crackdown on communists, then Enabling Act giving Hitler powers unfettered by parliament. Then book burnings several weeks later.

Stopped by the @financialtimes.com mothership in London this week and spotted our recent award for our investigative documentary film published earlier this year about Russia’s executions of Ukrainian soldiers.
