This is interesting! There used to be an app called iFootpath a bit like this which was amazing for previewing curated routes, but it got sold and gutted. This being a charity might be more sustainable, and might give me something to do on a weekend!

and currently on our way to Stockholm, rolling past beautiful woods and lakes with an excellent dinner on the Snälltåget. Why fly anywhere cattle class when you can watch the world go by with such luxury?

Another adventure by train! This time to Finland, and cheating later by taking a ferry... Eurostar to Brussels for moules fries and beers, then to wonderful Copenhagen with its parks and harbourside (where the French carrier gave us a salute)...

We seem to be moving to "tyranny of the majority" - if 52% of people wants something actively harmful to the other 48%, is that still democracy?

It's even worse that that majority is often an ephemeral 'will of the people' and, like Brexit, is votes for soundbites rather than considered policies.

Feels like Today programme finally gave up challenging guests when Mishal Husain left. With the changes to Newsnight does feel like the BBC has given up it's role in UK life, at least the Inform bit.

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.

On DEI - white guys subconsciously prefer to hire white guys, rather than purely on merit... Diverse management is _more_ likely to hire on merit, because it's less prone to that bias. Would be good for Jon to look into DEI, rather than just repeat Trump talking points.

Businesses (mostly) don't have a vote - who votes Labour for this? Who benefits? Who cares about 'growing the economy' if it trashes the environment, precipitates another financial crash, and hands power to the tech bros?

All while refusing to help young people with EU mobility and decent houses.

Then, to Bucharest! Taking the Corona, which gets a lot of good press for its dining car - which was excellent! They even have beer on draft 🍻. Managed two courses and an after-dinner Palinka - a Hungarian and Romanian spirit which I'm getting in to!

After a delayed train (with an unfulfilled threat to stick us on a replacement bus) we arrived at the lovely Budapest-Keleti, to spend a couple of nights seeing the sites

Also popped into Vytopna Railway, which delivers your beers and food by train (thanks to x.com/PaliparanDotCom) - one for the kid inside the grown up!

Passed a pleasant night on the NightJet to Vienna, with a good breakfast to start (and free slippers). Dumped bags at Vienna hbf (the lost & found next door to the lockers will happily change notes for you), and went to explore the Xmas markets 🎄
