While he passed several years ago, I want to wish John Christopher (aka Samuel Youd) a happy birthday. Empty World was the first post-apocalyptic novel I ever read, and I've been hooked ever since. His Tripods trilogy is also exceptional.

Into 85 and that's one way to finish Tripods and promote Terry and June next on BBC1.

When it comes to kids literature I find its the stuff published before HP that holdd up better.

The Tripods trilogy is far more mature than HP or its various bad imitators/competitors combined

The Tripods trilogy and The Sword of the Spirits trilogy were my first exposure to dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories as a teenager. They remain amongst my favourite books, along with Sam Youd’s novels for adult readers.

#GenX middle-school fantasy nerd starter kit: The Chronicles of Prydain, Lord of the Rings, and the Tripods Trilogy.

Tripods was by John *Christopher* (a.k.a. Sam Youd), not John Wyndham (but the confusion is VERY understandable).
More even than the tripods books, his Sword of the Spirits trilogy kind of messed me up, emotionally. I still regularly think of its last line. ("But I shall have no son.")
