'It’s not that the UK has no constitution. We have one, but its thread is as easy to follow as a fishing line washed ashore after months at sea, bundled and ravelled in weed and tar....If democracy is not clear and intelligible, it’s not democracy.'

We're facing a political emergency: a high likelihood of an shamelessly authoritarian government in 2029. So we urgently need this basic safeguard: a codified constitution.
This week's column explains what we're missing and why it's so important.

Katie Lam, the shadow home secretary saying legal migrants need to be deported (The Times) will be seen by many as the most racist comment we’ve heard in recent years. Why this isn’t headline news is scandalous. Which will translate to many as acceptance and agreement. Britain needs to get a grip.

Yes, they are actually saying that a "foreigner" who has worked here for decades, paid National Insurance, & is entitled BECAUSE OF THAT to a state pension, would be deported for the crime of claiming it.

There's an old truism that politics can't work if you think the other side is actually evil.

But I don't really know what else to call this

β€˜Crackers’ is a very kind way to describe these deeply immoral and fascist manoeuvrings by the Tory party. They have lost their minds. Driven mad by their own prejudice and failure. We have to make sure that this particular brand never sees power again.

Here Lam explicitly sets out her proposal - which is official Conservative Party policy - to deport long-standing legal permanent residents who have *ever* claimed any benefit, including the state pension or child benefit (even if the child is British), or who earn less than Β£39K.

Tory policy is to revoke permanent residence (ILR) for everybody who does not earn Β£38k - deporting most nurses who have ILR

This is put in the video as "who is unlikely to contribute more than they cost"

NB: video does not say EU settled status is exempt

The data shows Brexit was a massive mistake and badly hurt the economy. We're all paying for it. It was Nigel Farage who sold the lies that it would make life better. How can anyone still listen to him about anything?

Just listened to Chris Mason on Radio 4 defending BBC's excessive coverage of Farage & Reform. I was outraged by his response to legitimate criticism. I no longer trust the BBC's political coverage (actually I haven't for some time, but the BBC's behaviour has grown even worse of late).

Amazing story in The Times. Reform UK failed to pay VAT to HMRC on its sales (tickets, merchandise). About Β£400k in all.

Not tax avoidance. Not tax evasion. They just didn't realise when you sell stuff you have to charge VAT.
