A hermit crab in a white bowl. The whole hermit, shell, carapace, chelipeds, and the upper part of the legs, is covered with a brownish fuzz made up of hydroids, tiny carnivorous animals, growing from a low mat, stretching their tentacles into the water to collect their prey. The hermit keeps his eyes clean, wiping them with his mouthparts. The antennae and antennules are also free of hydroids. Hermie is looking over another shell; it has a broken spire and seems to be carrying hydroids as well.
