You can measure your progress by how many screens you have to fall to get back to the ground level

You know what does this really well is Silksong. You start the game at a little settlement at the foot of a mountain, and the entire first act you spend climbing that mountain and every new zone connects to the same pit that goes back down to the settlement

Yeah. And both games make use of that to really fun effect when you find the real version of those spaces in the late game, but even so

God they've pulled that move three whole ass times now lmao

Also makes little sense in Bloodborne, where iirc you can't fast travel from the dream, just warp back and forth from the current lantern, and there's very little to find or do in the dream

Aside from chalice dungeons I guess. I always forget those are a thing because I think they kinda suck lol

But none of that really flies with DS3 because, in my memory anyway, it's much more of a straight line

In DS2's case I can imagine that being deliberate since the game is a bit less linear

Maybe they *wanted* to break up your momentum and wanted you to feel a little less stranded. Give you an opportunity to think about whether you want to keep banging your head against a wall or try a different path

But you're totally right that loading back and forth kills your momentum and also kind of robs you of the feeling of having traveled way too far into dangerous territory and having no recourse but to keep pushing through

I assume the change happened to encourage people to explore the hub more and find the plot hooks for the side stories there
