Same. Loved Planetside 1, but never got on with 2.

It feels much, much less of a joint fight. Was so disappointed first time jumping in a magrider to find the driver now controlled the main gun... which immediately felt wrong to not need a main gunner buddy.

"lest we forget"

Anyone watching this with admiration has already forgotten any of the lessons from WW1 or WW2.

Another bad sign would be the large numbers of people cheering it happening.

A beautiful bare autumnal Beech tree

A beautiful bare autumnal Beech tree

Just a beautiful bare autumnal Beech tree from today's walk in Brandon Country Park.

The ground everywhere was a wonderful carpet of yellow orange & brown leaves.

Because it’s drowned out by the hateful, racist shit of Labour’s immigration policies, which they drone on about pretty much every day.

It's still wild that has ever been anywhere near 40%, let alone that it continues to be above it even now.

The USA is most definitely not ok.

Oil is the most Lovecraftian thing that actually exists. You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth, made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?

Kind of familiar.

It would help if people explained "why" policies "can't" work, instead of just staying it as if it's an absolute truth.

A great point. If you read the UK press, spend time on X and fall prey to elite radicalisation, you can very easily fool yourself into thinking you represent the silent majority when in fact you are an increasingly extreme minority. It's funny when conservatives scold liberals about their "bubbles"

I've always been concerned that the exclusive focus on specific (and often not well defined) conditions, blinds is to just how different everyone is & that to get the best out of anyone requires an understanding of how they uniquely work.

The "normal" vs "not normal" paradigm has a lot of dangers

It's the wrong lesson. Obviously.

Fascism reinvigorated National conflict and it had much in common with the inhumane Imperialism from before that pushed Empire, Nation, King, country & Flag as reasons to struggle & die.

This lesson from WW1 has, over time, been overshadowed by Hitler making fascism and the fascist state the enemy and allowing a reframing of Nationalism & national conflict as a win/lose affair

This lesson that people's lives can be destroyed as much by their own country's ambitions than by those of others, that the struggle of any Nations for supremacy over each other is a lose/lose struggle, making life worse for nearly everyone.

Fear of that is what led so many of the wealthy political class in Europe to look favourably on the rise of fascism, for a time seeing it as the antidote to their ailing grip on power, the fading appeal of Flag & Empire & the threat of socialist revolution.

Political players & movements, & the awareness of them, became more international, more of a talking point.

This is one of the main reasons that socialism & communism were seen as such a great threat in the post war period. The revolution in Russia was expected by many to spread

The war expanded people's experience of the people & the world beyond their own country.

Many common people found they had more in common with their counterparts in other countries than their own wealthy elite at home.

There were so many of these instances that leaders banned them, introducing harsh penalties for any fraternising or sharing of provisions. The Christmas match (if it happened) would have been opposed by the UK leadership.

WW1 weakened nationalism & fostered recognition of a shared humanity

The Christmas football match is a favoured story, but its import is lost. It may be a myth but symbolises many instances where soldiers recognised they were all victims

Instances of shared humanity where they realised they had more in common with each other than those who sent them out to die.

One of the forgotten lessons of the 1st World War was the notion that dying for a flag, an Empire, for your King is not noble.

Dying in power games played with the lives of their subjects is nothing but human sacrifice to the new gods of money & possession.

I suspect most water companies would be happy to see OFWAT scrapped.

I guess what you meant was replaced with a regulator capable of holding water companies to account & improving standards & supply & costs for the public?

The Kindertransport’s complex legacy

What staggers me is how many people speak proudly of the Kinder Transport.

No one ever stops to ask why their parents didn't accompany them. Why we allowed children to be separated from parents who we left to die.

A cruelty inflicted in large part due to UK xenophobia & anti-semitism

For the last century many people have imagined what an American dictator might look like but none that I know of predicted that his approach would be to repeatedly say β€œHello I would like to be a dictator.”

There is zero context for what he might see as wrong. There are many things wrong with the country that I think a lot of us would agree with. For example we've watched government after government pander to & encourage the kind of language & views he & his friends fought against.

Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani’s supposedly radical policies as β€˜normal’ Critics of New York City’s mayor-elect have said his pledges of free bus service and universal childcare are unrealistic, but in Europe it’s a given

Exactly. In the EU, Mamdani would be considered a centrist.

If you've never done so, you really should visit a place like Denmark and see how things actually work, versus the doom and gloom peddled by the GOP.
