Ceasefires aren’t like a kids game of tag where you can pause and unpause on a whim. Even in that game, it’s bullshit.

There's Now a Casino in Everyone's Pocket. For Some Young Men, It's a Near-Fatal Gamble The rise of mobile sports-bet operators like FanDuel and DraftKings has coincided with a spike in problem gambling among young men in America.

I think sports app betting is ruining sports watching. On a much more profound level, it is ruining lives, thousands of them. I hear that we can't put the genie back in the bottle, but actually, we can if we want it enough. We should want that enough: www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

Autocrats want you to feel like pushing back is hopeless. It’s not! Trump is a paper tiger. Most Americans don’t want this authoritarian takeover.

1. Graham Platner is an oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran who’s running for the United States Senate in Maine. He’s trying to knock off Susan Collins. He’s presented himself as a common-man candidate who stands against oligarchy, genocide and the oppression of the little guy.

A small but telling part of all this: they demolished the wing that typically houses the First Lady's office to make way for Trump's vanity project.

E-bikes could cut carbon, congestion, and costs β€” if cities take them seriously E-bike sales are booming, providing a clean form of transportation that also improves public health. Yet cities remain committed to cars.

Israel keeps Gaza border crossing closed while reducing aid deliveries The ceasefire on Wednesday was largely holding, although Hamas described Israeli attacks in Gaza as violations of the agreement.

β€œAMMAN, Jordan β€” Israel on Wednesday kept closed a crucial border crossing from Egypt to Gaza and cut in half the amount of aid allowed to enter in retaliation for what it says are delays in the handover of bodies of dead hostages by the militant group Hamas.” β€”

Agree with this take. Right now, there are a number of good but small substacks/blogs/newsletters and I'd love to see more things like Defector and Hell Gate where people are working together as a collective. That seems to be the most sustainable model forward for journalism

I was writing on Substack for a while, but I've grown increasingly uncomfortable with the platform and who's funding it. So I tried out Ghost, which is great but pricey. I think I've settled on Beehiv for now so for now you can find me at swampthings.beehiiv.com

Sticking with car dependence is a failure of imagination, particularly when the wide range of benefits of ending car dependence is so clear.

Likely, they'll ignore it or downplay it or outright lie about who's responsible.

How federal agents are terrorizing American citizens Last week, hundreds of heavily armed federal agents descended on an apartment complex in Chicago, arriving in Black Hawk helicopters and moving trucks.

1. Federal agents from ICE and other agencies are wrongly detaining U.S. citizens, sometimes detaining them for days, on suspicion that they are undocumented immigrants.

The raids are done without search warrants or other procedures designed to protect civil liberties.

Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

β€œI asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. β€œI asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.

To be clear, both photos are bad but the right one is obviously so much worse. When progressives take power again, they need to make sure that photo on the left shows $0/month

People need to decide which Trump they think is real:

1. Master evil genius capable of executing a complex multistage blueprint for American fascism

2. Elderly authoritarian with the attention span of a gnat and comparable impulse control

Neither is a good thing, but I know where my money is.
