I grew up in the Netherlands and this kind of infrastructure still blows me away. This is a suburb of Leiden, built in the 70s, with beautiful cycle paths in green corridors through the entire area πŸ‘Œ
Ps. Paths are well lit after dark too btw.

This is what we've been *fucking saying*!? This is why you need *more* planning, not *less* planning! You need to plan things! The market will not provide!

What fun... Wikipedia may be blocked in the UK under a later stage of our insanely self-defeating online safety law.

There's a court case going on, but if Wikipedia lose it they're going to IP-block the UK because the only other alternative would be to put in adult ID checks.

Violent or destructive left wing protest is framed as delegitimising the protesters' stated cause.

Violent or destructive right wing protest is framed as emphasing the need for urgent action on the protesters' stated cause.

As always, right wing men are treated as elemental forces without agency.

We already have a lot of this unfortunately, they've been building estates like this for decades now. A lot of people on here or journalists etc are a bit blind to the scale of the problem

This has been frustratingly obvious for decades to anyone who's visited places like Essex ☹️

A driver has been jailed after a "pursuit of anger" ended in the death of a young mother who was knocked off an electric bike on a narrow country lane.
Alana Armstrong, 25, described as a "caring, compassionate" mother, was a passenger on the bike driven by her boyfriend Jordan Newton-Kay, on Batley Lane, Pleasley, Derbyshire, on 26 November when it was hit by a Land Rover Discovery.
Keaton Muldoon, 23, of Tuckers Lane, Mansfield, had previously admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Framing.

A Land Rover driver chased and deliberately drove into two people travelling on an e bike, killing one.

Headline is appalling.

The Skoda Fabia had this under the passenger seat, think our old Ford did as well.
The best Skoda feature is the little plastic clip on the A-pillar to hold car park tickets against the windscreen

Now is the time to reimagine the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Give Londoners a free, 24-hour accessible fixed crossing of the Thames.

Haha, always awful people whatever the mode of transport! But much anger from pedestrians and cyclists is because of being put in danger or inconvenienced by selfishness (parking on pavements etc), whereas a lot of driver anger is at people going "too slowly", taking "their" parking space etc

19.07.2025 09:26 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

My theory is that walking/utility cycling/public transport more likely to make people more left wing and driving more likely to make people more right wing. Simply by having to be around and deal with other people, rather than in a private car getting angry at other traffic

And whilst cycle infrastructure isn't just in urban areas in the Netherlands, I think urban areas are going to be where there's a better chance of infrastructure being built and modal shift in the UK, US etc to begin with

17.07.2025 10:49 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Sorry, I meant in most urban environments (since we're talking about utility cycling). There's a few very hilly cities of course, but many are relatively flat. Proper climbing is a different matter!

17.07.2025 10:46 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Even a normal bike with gears can make most hills not a big problem for most people after a bit of practice. The issue is going up hills on a normal road is very off-putting without a safe separated bike path.

Wonder if they'll replace all the on-grade pedestrian crossings on the A1 at the same time? Those should be illegal, expect no-one ever tries to cross but someone following a map could end up at one of those

Good cycle infrastructure, despite being relatively inexpensive, is transformative.

The whole ****ing point of email is that it's a generalised protocol. You can aggregate all your messages in one place. They don't time-out, or vanish when you log off. Other people can't eff about with them. They're not subject to a proprietary algorithm.

So OF COURSE some people want it gone.

You just leave it by the security guard desk by the entrance. Always a load of shopping trolleys left there in our local Tesco, and I used one for a bit and used to do the same.

"old church on its grounds" normally means they moved the rest of the original medieval village so they'd have a nice park around the house...

1. One thing you need to realise about the British Establishment is that it uses clowns to express its deepest desires. People like Rod Liddle offer a kind of deniability - "lighten up, he's just having a laugh". But they deliver a closer representation of its truths than any sober editorial.

Exactly same in PR/comms roles. I see so many say β€œoh it’s just the grunt work/low level stuff that will be replaced”. But that’s how you learn the role, the strategy, and how to work with teams/other people.

You can’t block a whole bit of the pipeline & expect it to carry on flowing healthily.

Almost every paragraph of this article describes another atrocity or war crime, with first-hand testimony from Israeli soldiers.

Beyond obscene, and the callous indifference of the UK political and media establishment equally so.
