Our latest preprint, led by @lizihegarty.bsky.social & aided by @erinwatson.bsky.social shows that fixation time matters when it comes to visualising #macrophages in #salivarygland & other epithelia. We find 1hr allows detection of mac subsets while preserving architecture. Dynamic changes to the intestinal environment occur throughout recovery from experimental ischaemic stroke - Rachel M L Martin, Isobel C Mouat, Robert J Whelan, Lizi M Hegarty, Lizzie F R Blunt, Chris... Stroke survivors can experience a plethora of complications throughout their recovery that impair quality of life and impact neurological outcomes. Intestinal d...

We have a second paper to share this week, this time investigating the gut-brain axis in stroke.

Here we show that stroke is associated with persistent gut structural and microbiome changes, however these changes are distinct in acute and chronic recovery.

Innate type 2 lymphocytes trigger an inflammatory switch in alveolar macrophages Monocyte-derived macrophages are highly plastic, whereas tissue-resident macrophages resist inflammatory reprogramming. Verwaerde et al. show that tissue-resident alveolar macrophages can be reprogrammed during type 2 pulmonary immune responses by activating IRF4-driven chemotaxis and fusion pathways and conversely suppressing PPARΞ³-dependent homeostatic programs.

Adenophages are an atypical macrophage population in exocrine glands sustained by ILC2-derived GM-CSF - Nature Immunology Here the authors identify adenophages, a previously unknown macrophage population present in exocrine glands in mice and humans. These cells are dependent on ILC2-derived GM-CSF and support glandular ...

This collab started when I met Fredi at the 2023 #EMDS meeting. Since then it’s been wonderful working with her, @selmatuzlak.bsky.social & Burkhard to explore these GM-CSF dependent #macrophages in #glands. Delighted to see this published in @natimmunol.nature.com πŸ₯³

IRR researchers and colleagues discover that the common childhood virus, RSV, leaves lasting β€˜immune memory’ in lungs.

Proteins that help fight infection (MHCs) stay elevated, boosting protection for subsequent infections but also increases the risk of allergies.
