Most humans are incredibly gullible and the dollars spent by moneyed candidates takes advantage of that.

New yachts all around! I remember when the local IBEW voted to lower wages to compete with the non-union shops. One of the larger contractors in town had just won a large bid, so the owner went right out and bought a yacht. Of course, non-union shops dropped their wages too, so all the workers lost.
