Tired They/Them Chicago bike dyke. Lover of people-centered urbanism. Radical daydreaming about public housing, cats, end of empire, universal basic income.

Best Big City: Chicago Wins Award 9th Year in a Row Learn why Chicago was voted the Best Big City for the 9th consecutive year by exploring our vibrant culture, welcoming inclusion, and so much more.

BEST BIG CITY IN THE US 9 YEARS IN A ROW.

While critics try to paint Chicago as something to fear, the rest of the world knows the truth β€” this is the best big city in America.

Public seating, interactive art, and put a couple of trees in (if they don't want to dig up sidewalk, put them in planters) but considering this is likely up to the city, I know the space will stay bare.
May be a good experiment for the guerrilla tactical urbanists? πŸ‘€

So the American taxpayer eats it twice, once on tariffs and again on a second farm bailout. I’m glad farmers are getting help, no one should lose their farm, but it’s remarkable how fast β€œsocialism” stops being a dirty word when the checks clear in red counties.

β€œwhile our region has developed and evolved over the past several decades, our regional transit system has not.β€œ

And I didn’t realize this before:
β€œAt the regional level, suburb-to-suburb commutes far outnumber suburb-to-city commutes”

Massage therapist I've been going to for years switched locations. From my house it's 30 minutes by car. Taking the CTA it's an hour and a half.
There's so much potential to make transit an attractive option for people.

There are a lot of reasons we did not win today, and we will in the coming days have much more to say about what happened and what’s next.

But for now, we want to say thank you.

Thank you for believing with us. Thank you for fighting with us. Thank you for showing up, even when things were hard.

Unfortunately, there is no shortage of people in power who have sought any excuse to abdicate responsibility to the public right of way – and, unfortunately, there are some who did not make good on their word for a program they claimed to support.

And so today, we did not win.

Today was a very difficult day.

Almost 5 years ago, the #PlowTheSidewalks campaign was born out of frustration from a problem that we were determined had a solution – and one that unites us all in the winter.

RTA cuts 2026 transit gap in half β€” but funding fight remains The RTA has cut its 2026 transit deficit projection, but advocates warn the smaller number could give lawmakers an excuse to delay a long-term bailout.

RTA is expected to magically cut the fiscal cliff in more than half today. Labor says it’s smoke and mirrors to distract from reform efforts.

City planners did all the overdone outreach process, got told everyone supports bus lanes, didn’t like that outcome so they opted for a closed door private meeting with the 4 people who didn’t like bus lanes and said we must cancel them

This is called reverse engineering

Nothing moves large numbers of people across a major city quite as well as public transit.

But cycling can provide some relief when transit is down. It can fill in many of the gaps.

Here’s BIXI preparing for the transit strike in Montreal this week, all over downtown.

I was thinking the asphalt around the Garfield Park bandstand could be cool to skate on once they restored it

This is proven by Seattle’s 30 year census data for the urban village strategy. Imagine a whole city that allows housing growth?

Aldermanic Prerogative needs to thrown out like yesterday's trash, but we could limit the damage a lot by just making buildings like this legal by right on every parcel 1/2 mile from a rail station and 1/4 mile from a major bus line

Limiting housing supply below demand makes a neighbourhood/city more exclusive.

Who gets excluded? It’s not the people on top of the income spectrum. They can live where they want.
