We feel that to celebrate Mother’s Day without remembering those who are punished for the simple crime of being women would not be appropriate.

Mothers in Afghanistan face one of the highest mortality rates worldwide, and yet are restricted to effectively being birth machines.

Four years of gender apartheid have negatively impacted Afghan women in virtually every way imaginable, from restricted movement to a near-total ban on education and work and even being banned from being visible from windows.

In commemoration of yesterday’s Mother’s Day, we want to highlight the situation of the women of Afghanistan, whose circumstances are among the most dire.
