idk why i even check the examiner at this point, overall quality is poor and factual errors which should not have survived an editor seemingly abound

i don't know the author and dislike being mean, perhaps they were rushed or badly edited, but Im put off reading them in future.

the glazing of Newsom is embarrassing, praising him for "trolling" trump (not his actions) while ignoring his harmful transphobia and cruelty towards the homeless, both v trumpian qualities.

its also strange to mention charlie kirk and not bring up his chummy podcast with Newsom

anyway...

more broadly, the writing in the article seems disjointed, as though a number of bullet points were connected together poorly.

the thesis seems muddled (and credits trumps intelligence a bit much) and i don't think the comparison of Nixon, Hamlet and Machiavelli quite coheres into anything.

moving on to Hogan's description of Machiavelli as a "master of subterfuge and obfuscation" and "sleight-of-hand trickster" - this somewhat clashes with my understanding of the man himself, who somewhat briefly served the republic of florence in its last decades...

Madman theory - Wikipedia

so where did Hogan get this quote?

well, either this linked translation (i don't intend to spend time tracking down the source further)
www.intratext.com/IXT/ENG1264/...

or the wikipedia page for "madman theory", which Hogan also mentions in his article...

the quote โ€œa very wise thing to simulate madnessโ€, sounds somewhat crude for Machiavelli, a usually elegant writer

it not quite a quote, but a (poor) translation of a chapter title from Discourses (book 3, ch2)

"That on occasion it is wise to feign folly"

which reads much better to me

incorrect description of Machiavelli + odd quote

"Niccolรฒ Machiavelli was the master of subterfuge and obfuscation. A sleight-of-hand trickster whose name became synonymous with political manoeuvring and expediency.
He was a morally bankrupt prince who once uttered into the universe that sometimes it can be, โ€œa very wise thing to simulate madnessโ€. "

so was it Hogan or an editor (presumably from misunderstanding the title of his most famous work) who posthumously promoted Machiavelli from civil servant to prince?

The reason I'm concerned about Maria Steen being on the ballot isn't that she will win (she won't).

My worry is that if she is nominated, it will mean a month of national airtime for a hate campaign against vulnerable groups, carried by a media too scared of being sued to call it what it is

while you can opt-out at any time, the period before my bank will automatically share data with zippay is the 28th of October, a mere 10 days from now.

i may opt-in at some point but I automatically dislike an opt-out service that involves transfer of my data to a 3rd party.

I'm not certain it being tied to phone contacts is the best idea either, i somewhat expect to hear of scams along the lines of "hi mam i lost my phone this is a new number + can you send me money"

we will see how it is implemented, of course, id expect/hope such things have been considered

The "obvious" use of zippay appears to be things like settling up after a friend pays for a meal, so far it doesn't seem to be intended for commercial transactions.

that seems quite limited

Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), the voice of banking and payments in Ireland, commented on the announcement through the words of Brian Hayes, Chief Executive BPFI: โ€œWe are delighted to join AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB in announcing the introduction of Zippay to the Irish market next year. Developed in response to ustomer
feedback and demand, this will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users. It will be delivered through customersโ€™ existing mobile banking apps and therefore comes with all the same high levels of security, protection, and digital safety and avoids the need for topping up a digital wallet or downloading a separate appโ€.

Describing how the app will work, Mr Hayes continued: โ€œEligible customers will automatically be enrolled to Zippay, which will appear in their personal banking app once the service is launched next year. It will use mobile numbers saved in the customerโ€™s contact list to identify who else uses Zippay. There will be no need to set up a new payee or know their IBAN, BIC or account numbers, the money will transfer between accounts seamlessly. The service will allow customers to send up to โ‚ฌ1,000 per day as well as request up to โ‚ฌ500 per transaction. It will be simple, speedy and secureโ€.

Its odd to see this being rolled out now, I wonder how it relates to the "digital euro" that the EU commission has been on about - right now, with the given description, it seems to be a feature-incomplete revolut-ish app

why are publications, by those openly affiliated with anti-trans hate groups, being accepted?

who is making that decision?

Demographics, behavior problems, and psychosexual characteristics of adolescents with gender identity disorder or transvestic fetishism

Kenneth J Zucker, Susan J Bradley, Allison Owen-Anderson, Sarah J Kibblewhite, Hayley Wood, Devita Singh, Kathryn Choi

"This study provided a descriptive and quantitative comparative analysis of data from an assessment protocol for adolescents referred clinically for gender identity disorder (n = 192; 105 boys, 87 girls) or transvestic fetishism (n = 137, all boys). The protocol included information on demographics, behavior problems, and psychosexual measures. Gender identity disorder and transvestic fetishism youth had high rates of general behavior problems and poor peer relations. On the psychosexual measures, gender identity disorder patients had considerably greater cross-gender behavior and gender dysphoria than did transvestic fetishism youth and other control youth. Male gender identity disorder patients classified as having a nonhomosexual sexual orientation (in relation to birth sex) reported more indicators of transvestic fetishism than did male gender identity disorder patients classified as having a homosexual sexual orientation (in relation to birth sex). The percentage of transvestic fetishism youth and male gender identity disorder patients with a nonhomosexual sexual orientation self-reported similar degrees of behaviors pertaining to transvestic fetishism. Last, male and female gender identity disorder patients with a homosexual sexual orientation had more recalled cross-gender behavior during childhood and more concurrent cross-gender behavior and gender dysphoria than did patients with a nonhomosexual sexual orientation. The authors discuss the clinical utility of their assessment protocol. "

you know who *wasn't* subjected to "sex testing" at the 1986 Olympics?

Princess Anne

an aristocrat, a "blue blood", someone of "good breeding" as they say

the right kind of person

11.08.2025 00:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

so be clear about this

those who rally for exclusion are making a moral claim that some people are less worthy, that some are undeserving of human rights

testing can, has and will be *designed* towards the aims of discrimination

it will be refined when the wrong people get caught up in it

11.08.2025 00:51 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

no scientific measurement of blood or cells determines values of right or wrong, the humans who decide what the test is, to whom it applies, and where the line gets drawn *do*

the act of exclusion, regardless of by what rationale, is inescapably a decision - a value judgement
