The pursuit of 1.5°C endures as a legal and ethical imperative in a changing world As the world nears 1.5°C of global warming, near-term emissions reductions and adequate adaptation become ever more important to ensure a safe and livable planet for present and future generations

What becomes of the 1.5°C goal now that global warming is approaching that level?🌍🔥🌡️

In a new @science.org Policy Forum we explain how the 1.5°C goal remains a critical legal & ethical benchmark, even as the world nears and may soon exceed 1.5°C of global warming🧵1/

For those part of the #EGU bubble: Join CL3.2.1 on Tuesay at 8:30 in Room 0.31/32: Towards net zero and beyond: remaining carbon budgets, negative emissions, mitigation pathways and implications for society.
I have the pleasure of kicking it off and there are many great talks afterwards!

The people who produce this Mauna Loa atmospheric CO₂ record have a lab in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, about 50 miles (80 km) from the observatory. By closing the lab, it'll be really difficult to maintain the CO₂ observations.

Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Net zero policy: No, the cup isn't empty! According to the baseline established when the cup was half full and factoring in the drink which Dave definitely owes me, we can continue drinking at current rates for the forseeable future.

(Thread)

With all the news about the latest data showing that temperatures in 2024 were 1.6°C warmer than pre-industrial levels, many have asked what this means for the 1.5°C of the UN Paris Agreement.

A short 🧵that aims to distinguish the signal from the noise (1)

Great coverage, easy and realistic planning of trips and hikes (all offline). Only downside that will be introduced is only single country for offline use for non-premium users. Used it for hiking on 3 continents already 😇

1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
• "We are getting reports"... could mean anything.
• "We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't have it.
• "[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on limb. i
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

Very interesting post and opinion piece on climate policy. Focus on the US – but I think it's relevant for Europe, too:
"... create durable economic incentives that would survive political transitions. When decarbonization becomes good business, it becomes harder to dismantle climate progress."

Definitely check out the IAC floors (from L to P)! Unfortunately, N floor is gone on Wednesday and Thursday, but there are many amazing people to chat with :)

Countries could use nature to ‘cheat’ on net zero targets, scientists warn By relying on natural carbon sinks such as forests and peatlands to offset emissions, governments can appear closer to goals than they actually are

Softening the definition of Net Zero won’t stop global warming. As authors of the 2009 “Net Zero Papers” we call on countries and companies to recognise the need for Geological Net Zero, balancing flows of carbon into and out of the Earth’s crust.

A problematic estimate of warming from low-sulfur marine fuels A new paper provides a reasonable forcing estimate but errs on the global temperature response

The phaseout of sulfur in marine fuels in 2020 remains a part of the explanation for the weirdness we experienced in the latter half of last year, but far from the full one. For more, check our our new post over at The Climate Brink: www.theclimatebrink.com/p/a-problema...

Thinking climate action, biodiversity and energy supply together

Renewable energies are not the main driver of biodiversity loss. It is rather the other way round: renewables can limit climate change in order to preserve biodiversity. Cyril Brunner contextualises the trade-offs from a scientific perspective.
