As it happens, I saw a much, much smaller scale drone show as a part of a circus performance yesterday. Maybe 20 drones. These flew around and changed colours in a presumably pre-programmed pattern.

It looks like the drones are used as 3d pixels (voxels). The hard part is flying and keeping the thousands of drones in a grid formation, the rest is basically the same as drawing on a computer display.
