Before the afternoon sessions get started, Bowie expert and author of Bowie’s London, Paul Gorman, will be leading a Bowie Walking Tour through Bowie’s Soho and beyond (tickets to be released soon). For now, head to our Event page on the website or the link in bio to learn more about the festival and to secure your tickets.⚡️ Panellists include: James Briggs, Peter Carpenter, Simon Goddard, Paul Gorman, Paul Morley and Suzi Ronson. Details of the panel discussions and the full programme will be announced shortly. We are already counting down the days!⚡️#FoylesBookshop #EventsAtFoyles #DavidBowie #NewMusic

As a person repeatedly disappointed by Oxford, aside from its historic buildings, I’m determined not to make the same mistake with Cambridge. Going again this weekend. Please recommend things to do in Cambs- books/food/drink/arts you know the deal.

It’s certainly the one I find hardest to love. Partly I’m sure it’s the baggage, but partly it’s because most of the songs lack much emotional resonance, this despite many of the songs being ones I sang at school.

Here is the final Bad Cover Version round of the year from last Tuesday’s Betsey Book Quiz. They all begin with F - how many can you identify? Answers later…

Fool that I am, I’ve only just realised that the loud metallic beat that clangs out in the first verse of Costello’s I Hope That You’re Happy Now happens after he says ‘a horse that knows arithmetic’ and is clearly the horse’s hoof bashing out its answer to a puzzle. What a brilliant musical gag.

Cool little pub near me (Islington) called The Pocket which not only does tremendous beer but also has lovely live jazz. Tonight’s was terrific.

No no no no no no no no NEVER let American shows come to London. It will all be cameos for Geri Halliwell and Richard Branson, and a posh star (Joanna Lumley?) affecting a cockney accent. There will be comedy policemen. A minor royal played by Eddie Redmayne. I veto this. I VETO IT.

I don’t think this is true, to be honest, based on how many booksellers I’ve hired who began their ‘fix’ with HP, but it’s certainly truer than we used to think.
