But there are no sweet fairy tales here, no simple triumphs. That viral video about the mayor sending out the salt trucks to block ICE wasn’t even true - that was footage from a big culinary event here called Taste of Chicago. Hey, I fell for it, too. Why? Because it seemed so genuinely fucking Chicago, that’s why. It is incredibly reassuring that people around the globe and Chicagoans believed such a move to be absolutely in character for the city of Chicago. You might be shocked if many cities pulled a stunt like that, but not Chicago, a city I can best describe as what would happen if Philly went to one therapy session and read one self-help book. The chaotic benevolence and freakish lust for life embodied by Philadelphians is on its own level, and God, do I love those lunatics. But Chicago, too, is its own beautiful thing - and funny as fuck.
