this benefits autos of all sizes. Last summer, I was backing out of a parking spot and another car came out of a blind spot and before I had time to even register that the car was there and I was backing right into it, my own car fully stopped on it's own avoiding a collision.

Not discounting the issue in a general sense... However, modern autos have layers of safety sensors to aid in mitigating the danger. My 5 yr old VW will scream at me if I miss pedestrians or cross traffic in front or behind me, and will apply the breaks very forcefully if I don't react on my own.
