using AI to review a paper is one thing (and there's a lot to be said abt that), but submitting a paragraph-long AI summary as a review is a whole 'nother level of laziness. editors, flag that shit & never pass it along to the authors. also don't accept any papers or reviews from that reviewer.

New working paper led by Jaspreet Singh: osf.io/preprints/ps...

Some of you may know about repliCATS, in which (mostly Global North) experts used structured peer review to judge judge the credibility of behavioral research.

We used the same method with behavioral scientists from around Nairobi

This project was a learning experience as it was one of the first that I started at @busaracenter.bsky.social. The project has some flaws.

However, we ended the project with an open dataset of East African credibility assessments. I think that dataset would be fascinating to build upon

Why did this happen? Honestly I can only speculate. We dig into a few of these speculations in the paper.

However, it does seem that our East African assessors viewed the same papers differently than the original repliCATS assessors

We expected that East African experts would be more skeptical of the generalizability of the research they assessed than would the original repliCATS experts.

To our surprise, we found the opposite! In fact, across all dimensions of credibility, our East African researchers were more optimistic

We were especially interested in judgment of generalizability, as much behavioral research in East Africa (and much of the Global South) takes research from the Global North as a starting place and tests whether prior findings generalize to East Africa

Will anyone review this paper? Screening, sorting, and the feedback cycles that imperil peer review Scholarly publishing relies on peer review to identify the best science. Yet finding willing and qualified reviewers to evaluate manuscripts has become an increasingly challenging task, possibly even ...

1. Kevin Gross and I just posted a new science-of-science preprint.

This one explores the looming peer review crisis. As many of you know, it's becoming significantly more difficult for journal editors to find scholars willing to serve as peer reviewers for submitted manuscripts.

I was thinking about why so many in the radical left participate in "speedrunning"
The reason is the left's lack of work ethic ('go fast' rather than 'do it right') and, in a Petersonian sense, to elevate alternative sexual archetypes in the marketplace ('fastest mario')

Personally I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything inherently wrong in trying to consolidate a discipline in the traditional sense. To me it seems more like someone within the organizing committee for Metascience did not reflect sufficiently on what they wanted the values of the conference to be

05.07.2025 15:50 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 7    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And I say this as someone whose day job involves a lot of courting of big funding interests in order to sustain your team. Of course the money needs to exist to hold a big meeting but anyone developing finding streams should know what their values are as they do that work

Iโ€™m pretty disappointed to read this and other accounts of the Metascience conference, as I think there is room for a broad conference that attempts to be a big tent. But a metascience that does not retain its skepticism of big corporate interests is not one that I want a home in

This happened for two reasons. First, I was busy supporting @engys.bsky.social to put on our own conference: #ESAAfrica2025, the premier conference for experimental economics
