L.A. council puts off yet another attempt to rewrite the city's 'mansion tax' Councilmember Nithya Raman backed a plan to ask voters to rewrite Measure ULA, saying it's holding back housing production. The council asked for more review instead.

Great work from ACCE Los Angeles leaders and United to House LA! We showed up in HUGE numbers to beat back a flawed attempt to weaken L.A.'s mansion tax. But this battle isn't over. The proposal goes to committee, and we will show up again to save the People's Billion!

Nearly half of California's 17 million renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent. For every 100 ppl who exited homelessness in 2024, 118 more became homeless. In a weakening economy and an ongoing housing crisis, that's unsustainable.

Richmond ACCE member and tenant Edgar Valenzuela says he and his family has gotten a rent increase this year of 8% and last year, 10%. He says it's increasingly difficult to pay rent and have to deal with the constant threat of deportation.

SDG&E raked in $891M in profits in 2024, while low-income renters like Barbara are struggling to pay ever higher electricity bills. The CPUC can change that by voting this Dec. to set utility profits at reasonable rates, potentially saving Californians millions of dollars.

Electricity bills used to be manageable for San Diego resident and ACCE member Barbara Pinto, she recalls in this op-ed published in the Times of San Diego. That is, until her utility- San Diego Gas & Electric- decided to prioritize profits over what's best for consumers.

However, we didn't win everything we wanted. We fought for capping the rent at 3%, but some on the Council stood against this stronger plan that tenants really needed when it mattered. While what we ended up with isn't enough, it is a huge step.
