In an underwater scene, a sailfish, a mola, a mermaid whose flowing hair recalls marine algae, a dugong, and several golden trevally are grouped together in a vertically-oriented composition with some kelp against a black background. The illustration is drawn with intricate linework, with an emphasis on contours and varying line weight, and with areas of solid black ink.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 8 is for the Starling, clever survivors who I feel are kith.
We both sing our own songs, but also can bring every other we hear under our command; we both can murmurate in unparalleled unity.
We both have been seen as pests by those who brought us here, against our wills.

It’s a vibrant, stylized botanical painting featuring large protea flowers in full bloom. The petals are painted in bold warm tones—reds, oranges, and pinks—surrounded by lush green leaves and clusters of small blue and yellow blossoms. The background and composition are dynamic and layered.

A traditional diamond pattern and three leaf outlines in sashiko running stitch. Yellow and variegated threads on deep blue fabric. Leaves include ginkgo, ivy and maybe valley oak tree
#ArtAdventCalendar #sashiko #embroidery The upper left is a traditional pattern, the rest are based on outlines of real leaves found in my neighborhood. All waiting to be incorporated into something else. Sashiko is very relaxing, especially if you do freestyle shapes. Day 9.

A close-up of the back of a junkyard car with rusted mounts screwed into it. There is a scratch that looks like an upside down checkmark between the mounts
I call this one The Dancer. It was taken in a auto salvage yard a couple of months ago. I loved how the perfectly placed scratch interacted with the immovable rusty plates screwed into the back of the vehicle.

Messy brown painting of a wolf face. There are clumps of brown scattered throughout the canvas.
#ArtAdventCalendar day 8. I made this during my PhD fieldwork. It’s painted with bitumen collected from the tar sands (or oil sands) in Alberta. At the time, the Albertan government had just announced a wolf cull to protect endangered wood bison, which are in fact threatened by resource development.

Day 7 of the #ArtAdventCalendar. An edible entry this time around. These are vanilla cupcakes with American buttercream that I made for my sister’s birthday in April. I don’t do decorative piping often, but when I do, it’s always nice to challenge myself and these were fun.

I’m of two minds about this “male loneliness crisis” or whatever. On one hand it’s pretty clear that broken social relations (community, romantic, whatever) is a social problem.
On the other hand dawg you can’t sit in the house unwashed gaming with fascists and expect to get any play from women.

a woman shown from behind, with their head bowed and face covered by their hands. The figure’s bare back and shoulders are softly rendered with pale, muted tones, while their hair is dark and loosely gathered. The background is entirely black, which highlights the subject’s form and adds a dramatic, emotional contrast.

A digital painting of a variegated String of Hearts plant, a succulent. It has heart shaped green leaves overlaid with pastel pinks and purples due to sunstress. The overall effect is a pile of mottled pink hearts. The leaves are accented with gold leaf to show them better against the tangle of the vine and the dark background.
Time for some of my #plants I think, for #ArtAdventCalendar day 7. I’m a plant geek myself, and own… Too many. Large #garden, probably over 150 #houseplants. I did a whole series of succulents in a rainbow! They are amazing.
