me as a kid: wow I can't wait until we have robots and computers for everything

me now: if this toaster makes me download an app I am slipping out into the night to start a new life as a mysterious figure occasionally glimpsed in the fog

Continuing my Downton journey with the first movie that feels like a bunch of episodes squeezed together because there's such a large cast to service. It was fun but felt a bit resistant to any real change. In fact, it reset to the series status quo after sending some characters off in the finale.

I think Albanese is apathetic about transphobia because he's apathetic about everything. If there's an issue Anthony Albanese has a personal opinion on I'm fucked if I know what it is. I think Dutton was apathetic because he finds queerphobia and transphobia unstimulating

John O'Groats in two thirds of the way to the North Pole.
Queenstown is only halfway to the South Pole.

This is *Very Literally* the guy who wrote the β€œfirst the came for” poem. A self-described antisemite who supported Hitler until the regime took over the church. He got thrown into a camp because he objected. And then he wrote a poem that said β€œoh shit I never thought the leopards would eat my face”

This meme always does my head in, because how far E and W you've been very much depends on where you start. Haha.

But anyway... I've been further east since last time I did this.

N - John O'Groats, Scotland
E - Carlottetown PEI, Canada
S - Queenstown, NZ
W - Glasgow, Scotland

Yes! This is one of my major concerns - normalising it. AI slop is ugly. Don't get used to it.

Sorry to be a commie, but AI is a grift for capital to steal skill, wealth, and power from workers gradually over time. It is shown to make you dumber. Do not gladly de-skill yourself.

I realised yesterday I could have inserted a scorpion and the frog analogy about the relationship between media and tech platforms but I think that analogy is fairly overused now... Apt though.

The Polari Prize issued a statement saying it believes its longlistees can hold β€œdifferent positions on substantive issues.” This is like long listing a racist with authors of color then telling everyone it’s a mere β€œdifferent position on a substantive issue”. Trans people are a fact. Not an β€œissue”

When a single person can smear excrement on their own walls, what is the purpose of a gallery full of fine art?

I think I might have to unfollow people using ChatGPT, even if it's just to remind everyone it's crap. It's bad enough that Google gives us terrible AI data, why are you opening another app and wasting resources for the LOLs?

Warner Bros. has said The Hunt for Gollum is in fact the first of two new Lord of the Rings feature films from Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens based on J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, as the company aims to make more of the franchise. With The Hunt for Gollum, we’ll get to see what Gollum was up to in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Can't stress this enough: nobody fucking cares what he was up to

I wish the ongoing characters arcs weren't all about the crew dealing with relationship drama, though. People are worried about Starfleet Academy being a CW soap and early scenes of this episode felt exactly like that.

SNW 3x05 - a pretty solid episode of Trek. Nice mystery combined with some creepiness. But so much on-the-nose dialogue and I could have done without Pelia's "ancient evil" speech at the end, which does not suit this franchise at all.

At the start of the day, I was told my reviews were full of bad takes.

At the end of the day, a theatremaker told me it's been nice to have my thoughtful review quotes accompany him and his shows around the world.

I know this merger has been in the works for a while, but given this episode was shot last year and probably written the year before (after the strike), I think the real culprit is lack of imagination. This season has been particularly safe. I'm worried about post-merger Trek though.

there's an episode of The Simpsons where Marge tries to get a violent cartoon pulled from the airwaves, only to discover that the people backing her aren't going to stop at just the art that *she* doesn't like, and that supporting artistic freedom means accepting discomfort.

It aired in 1990.

Yeah, imagine writing an episode about the holodeck and not diving into LLMs and how the technology works in regard to actual modern technology. That could have been interesting, rather than it just being a magic room that works how it's always worked.
