Again, I apologise. I'm not looking for your sympathy, you don't owe me shit. That's a miscommunication on my part; I'm not asking you to accommodate my weakness, but asserting that I (and others like me) need to be stronger.

I guess what I meant to say with that statement is that you're correct, it's not complex in a meaningful sense outside of our own heads & we desperately need to learn to get over ourselves more.

100% not saying it isn't stupid. It is. It's something we all need to challenge in ourselves and the psychological difficulty is absolutely less meaningful than the real harm failing to do it does and will do.

It's therefore maybe a little less jarring when I discover there are still ways in which I personally need to improve, though of course it does still cause friction.

It's like climate change & a lot of other things. The answers are mostly known, what's complex is persuading ourselves to enact them.

I think there might be a certain privilege in my own position, in that my views have changed so overtly throughout my life that I know for a fact that I've been a shithead for much of it and as a result I'm pretty sure there's still some degree of racist shithead still residual in me.

The complexity involved lies mostly in our competing desires to stop being racist and also still regard ourselves as good people.

It becomes harder to self-interrogate when our egos keep insisting that we're good people ergo what we did must in fact have been fine and you're all imagining things.

It's like with a lot of other stuff I think, I wind up putting more pressure on myself than anyone else & constantly feel like I should be doing more.

It's much easier to give friends space for their burnout & executive dysfunction than it is to give myself that grace sometimes :/

I always feel a little embarassed when I get to #PrideOnParade posts late. Honestly the last two and a half weeks have been rough but I should still be more on the ball.

A lot of places in the Imperium are more likely to put you in prison for not having enough kids tbh, they need more factory workers, materials for servitors, meat for the grinder etc.

Especially Deathworlder societies and places like Cadia, it's seen as a moral responsibility.

These do 100% exist. There's the Quar, Gaslands, a couple of casual games I've seen centred on very simple tank combat rules, the Star Wars/Trek Attack Wing stuff, one I used to play that was about pirates.

They're just a lot more obscure than the turbo-Catholic space fascism we're all used to.

This is the most inane criticism possible but that's a Russian weapon and if the tortoise fired it in that position he'd destroy his own helicopter with the backblast.

This whole thing is awful, unprofessional and depressing on so many levels before you even get to that though.

Anyway, point still stands. Find the people society primes you most strongly to hate and build community and empathy with them. They're humans like you. There'll be something to bond over.

The post I was replying to was deleted but I figure this is an important point to make regardless, and as good a time as any to make it.

This is why I specifically seek out the perspectives of transgender people, disability activists and black women. We need to build community with those worst off.

(or at least it should be. I'm wary of labels as simple and binary as "left" and "right" for this reason, if I were being fully precise in terminology I'd probably call myself an intersectional libertarian consequentialist or something but as far as well-understood ideas go I'm basically ancom)

And honestly I think we need to do better in both directions; we need to do better at holding people we actually respect to account, and also at learning to genuinely respect and allow grace for marginalised people.

Real leftism is intersectional; I am not free until all of us are free.

For no better reason than because they're culturally much easier to respect- even when we've learned that the culture that stems from is destructive.

(insert "respectable" figure as appropriate, you get the idea)

Because all too often the answer, when "that" is something that a marginalised person would get relentlessly hounded for, if we're really honest with ourselves, is that we (the online left) would hear the cis white dude out.

Put simply, the test to offer someone is not necessarily "is there anything problematic you could infer from this if you wanted?" but "Would you be prepared to hear a well-presented cis white dude if they said/did this thing? Would you listen to Hasan Piker's explanation if he did that?"

They love to purity test marginalised peeps because it lets them say "look at me being a better leftist than this marginalised person, doesn't harassing this woman make me look good?"

This is why I've started thinking about "privilege" in terms of empathy afforded rather than advantage offered.
