Nah, you can't let the BBC producers off that lightly, this isn't a "British people think this is acceptable" thing, I'm British and I know it's fucked, and so do my friends. Being British is not an excuse to not know this is fucked.

We *need* to be able to understand this stuff, because otherwise how can we ever expect to be part of a trusted coalition with any marginalised people whose experiences we don't immediately share?

And not just any punch, but one with the weight and momentum of hundreds of years of oppression and enslavement, right to the soft parts of your gut.

At a certain point, the effect is more important than the intent. Involuntary is involuntary, but how you follow the involuntary action matters.

Further to all of this, the BBC deciding not to censor the shout- again, involuntary or not- allowed that punch to be transmitted to a huge number of people sitting at home.

To my white friends, I know there's no word that hurts us this way- but imagine if a punch could hit you through the screen.

I say this as a neurodivergent person who has literally punched a friend during a sensory overload. I may not have been in full control at the moment of impact, but the way I responded after that was 100% on me.

I've had communication issues due to my ND traits as well, I'm familiar there too.

Involuntary only lasts as long as the punch does. If your next move is not to immediately apologise and check the welfare of the specific person you've punched, *that is then a choice you have made* and you 100% have to wear that.

Racial slurs are implicit threats of violence. Their sole purpose is to dehumanise, and the purpose of dehumanisation is to make it OK to treat you as less than human. Don't think of this in terms of "there was an involuntary insult" so much as "there was an involuntary punch to the face."

Nobody fucking listens to me when I talk about racism or philosophy but here's my take anyway- this entire thread is spot on, a must-read. Disability is real and deserves a degree of grace but that grace only lasts long enough to see what you do next and intent often matters much less than effect.

He’s fine & he got his movie recognized at a big ceremony. The Black people he was calling slurs were hurt viscerally because slurs are violence, & all Black people who witnessed it were hurt. Funny our pain doesn’t matter, only a white man’s embarrassment at causing pain.

(and I don't mean to imply that it's your responsibility to do the educating of course, it's our responsibility to educate ourselves but a lot of us are simply not prepared to do the work because it's never impacted us enough to make the topic compelling).

This is the best pinpoint I've seen on why whites don't understand the issue. Part of white privilege- having been treated as "superior"- is there is no word a person could shout that has the same impact on us.
