Yep. I'm surprised they didn't cover up the cycle signs, 5 months is a long time.
The kerb segregation they've put in near the floating bus stop looks chunky so I'm hopeful the rest is good quality. ๐

The thing is the team behind this event isn't from "Haughmond Hill", they'll be driving from Shrewsbury etc. Parkrun needs a more defined ethos that offers guidance to people setting up events.
The information in my original screenshot should have been enough for someone at HQ to veto the venue.

I believe this one was setup by the same group that organised the Severn Valley parkrun, which is slightly less remote and averages about 100 people.
I'm not aware of any plans for more.

Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on the ~40% of Shropshire living in urban environments? At least make sure the venue is accessible to a local community?
If someone is going to drive anyway then they've already got a load of options available to them.
08.09.2025 19:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
The organisers have suggested they're expecting an average of about 50-100 people and they'll probably cancel the event when Shrewsbury or Telford aren't on. ๐คทโโ๏ธ

For the record: I like Haughmond Hill. It's a nice place, especially in the spring with the bluebells. I can see the attraction of hosting it there over of a suburban recreation ground or doing laps around a cycle track.
Just frustrating to see a lack of vision from the parkrun movement.

A map showing the location of Ludlow parkrun, in the middle of nowhere
A map showing Severn Valley Country parkrun. It takes place in a remote country park along the river Severn.
A map showing Haghmond Hill parkrun in relation to Shrewsbury and its parkrun. It sits in a remote area a couple of miles outside the town.
A map showing Alderford Lake parkrun in proximity to Whitchurch. It sits on a busy road outside the Whitchurch Bypass
Shropshire now has 7 parkruns, only 3 are in urban areas. The rest are attached to tourist attractions that only serve the people who drive to them.

Getting there by public transport
There are no public transport links available.
Getting there on foot
Due to its location, Haughmond Hill is not accessible on foot.
Getting there by road
Haughmond Hill is located just off the B5062 between Shrewsbury and Newport, Shropshire. It is approx. 5 miles from Shrewsbury and 15 miles from Telford.
There is a pay and display car park on site - card only or via the RingGo parking app. Regular visitors should consider purchasing a yearly membership for just ยฃ38 of free parking and benefits.
As the car park is small, please arrive early and/or consider car sharing where possible. Unfortunately due to the rural location there is no alternative parking available.
Shropshire has a new parkrun. Great! Shame its inaccessible to anyone outside a car. ๐

A screenshot of Google maps showing Shrewsbury Abbey with Abbey Foregate running along the top. A large car park is just south of it.
I'm sure people will moan about the loss of free parking spaces but really hard to justify them when there is a large 80p/h car park nearby.

โGreen Street at Abbey Foregateโ project is the first in a series of innovative yet practical interventions that deliver the Shrewsbury Movement and Public Space Strategy (MPSS).
The project will enhance the townโs natural environment by โgreeningโ and repurposing road space and its associated car parking dominance through the introduction of new routes through, and seating within, green and accessible spaces for the benefit of residents and visitors that prioritises pedestrians and cyclists.
Focused on the road running between The Abbey, one of the townโs most prominent heritage assets and a row of shops, restaurants and a public house it will deliver 1,080m2 of new, improved and accessible local green spaces, with the potential to foster investment and increase economic growth in the area.
A Google Streetview photo showing Abbey Foregate, the road mentioned in the scheme. On the right is Shrewsbury Abbey and on the left is a pub and a row of houses. The road is wide with free shortstay parking running allong the right hand side.
Shrewsbury greening scheme looks promising. Hopefully a road diet to undo some of the mistakes Thomas Telford made 200 odd years ago.

There are four triangular warning signs with signs of wear on them.
We have some in Shropshire, they're disconnected and most of the signs are looking a bit sad now.
CPRE has some information on them. I think the legislation is nearly 20 years old, it would be interesting to see if they've had a positive effect. www.cpre.org.uk/wp-content/u...

Worth listening to Julian's comments and the council officer's response - essentially they won't consider Active Travel England's suggestions for this *town centre* development until the use for each plot is defined. It speaks of #motonormativity. youtu.be/0MJrnF2FlBs?...

Northern Planning Committee - Riverside Shopping Centre
4.1.10 Historic England โ No objections but has concerns regarding the application on heritage grounds
Whilst the overall reduction in height appears construction, we remain disappointed that there has not been more substantive engagement with our advice. The application does not give sufficient consideration to the historic character and identity of this part of Shrewsbury and would not enhance the significance of heritage assets.
We welcome the identification and recognition of historic geology, topography and architecture as a way of retaining the character of the conservation area and creating a more cohesive link between the riverside area and historic town centre.
We also welcome the re-development of this underused area of Shrewsbury and
recognise that public benefits will result from its regeneration.
Historic England has concerns regarding the application and the potential for harm to be caused to the significant of the scheduled town wall and the character of the conservation area and not able to support the proposals as they stand.
The article is a bit misleading, HE actually praised the development and doesn't object to the application going through.
I think their concern is about the old town wall buried under it and the building facades used in the visuals not fitting in.
