heres this question i keep mulling over: Does a game need to explain it principles? (ie. Is it okay for games to presume familiarity with the system) You see this most with OSR games (Mork Borg for an example) but i would include CBR+ PNK to this too (a game i love).

But when I went to run Gradient Descent, I remember poring over the rulebooks trying to figure out how a more traditional gunfight should work out—with no real guidance (not even an example of play!) I defaulted to what I knew.

All this to say: your blog post gave me a lot to think about!

When I first ran Mothership, it was with Another Bug Hunt. In that context, single big scary monsters made it easy for me to follow the directions in Mothership (though I did not use entirely player facing rolls, I did follow the telegraph-plan-evaluate risk-resolve flow of combat).

I specifically remember it being quite disappointing in the gunfights that unfolded in my Gradient Descent campaign. One was a shootout with the security androids, where one of my players didn't hit a single shot the whole time. Another was an ambush by a rival Diver team that they had antagonized.

Just read your blog post on Violent Encounters in Mothership and loved it! I am one of those people who took the unclear guidance and simply defaulted to the baggage I had brought with me—which was D&D style "roll to hit" and strict turn order.

oh this is awful, it's exactly what were we all saying would happen.

i am so repulsed by modern corporate franchise crossovers. it's funko pop soup. they don't care about artistic cohesion or why things are included in the original context or shaped the way they are. everything is interchangeable branded content to them. it's so nihilistic.

I'm curious, how are you framing Caverns of Thracia? Is there anything special about your players' hub town? Did you put anything outside the dungeon?

Buying equipment and starting at the dungeon entrance works with a megadungeon, but ive been thinking about making a small locale around it.
