I feel like this is going to be a thing his whole career, but Wemby (as currently constituted) mostly represents an unkillable and unstoppable 1:1 basketball player, and maybe 3:3 basketball player. This isn’t the same as an unstoppable 5-on-5 player, though, and NBA teams will have to figure it out

The MLB equivalent of West Ham finishing 5th in the Prem just doesn't resonate as deeply, so going against the herd maybe doesn't matter as much to a small-market or cheap team like, say, the Pirates. (I would cite Brentford, but they're kind of the ur-example of the optimization strategy.)

But the bar for doing something another way can be super-duper high; you have to be really, really good to win doing something in a way isn't "optimal". The championship-or-bust mentality prominent in North American sports probably exacerbates that particular problem.

To spitball a bit, this probably correlates with the hyper-specialization and hyper-organization of youth sports.

The thing with a competitive environment like this is that there will always be value to be found in zigging while others zag, but...if the developmental apparatus gets too heavily calibrated to a narrow set of "optimization" principles, unconventional players who can buck trends never materialize.
