Until you look at their numbers and see that theyโ€™re driving 1/300 as often as the average human and realize that theyโ€™re likely choosing the conditions theyโ€™re driving in too. Human crash rates would be lower too if we drove .003 as often and in perfect conditions

Are there any independent, peer reviewed studies of av safety? It seems like the waymo report has pretty big issues with sample size and potentially selection bias. I feel like before we hand our public space over to a corporate robot army we should have someone double check their math at least ๐Ÿ˜…

Agreed, autonomous vehicles should be limited to transit agencies only, which should be allowed to use them for car-hires as a financing tool. Also operators of non-autonomous vehicles should be given 100% liability for all damages to person or property as an incentive to switch to the state service

Most worrying for the region, there are several instances of weird stones set in concrete, as in the pic below. This is also used in Eugene, and is a serious tripping hazard for pedestrians, on top of reducing the available space for walking.

While speed bumps may help reduce average driving speeds, they didnโ€™t think or care to put them only in the driving lanes, making for an uncomfortable bike ride

Springfield, Oregon, recently rebuilt .7 miles of Mill St with curb-level, one-way bike lanes. But for some reason, less than half the length of the street has the protected lanes โ€” most of it is just painted lanes. Garbage infra like this wonโ€™t convince anyone to bike instead of driving.

A difference between robot cars vs. regular cars is that with regular cars, drivers walk to where they park, spreading traffic out.

With robot cars, every event turns city streets into an airport pickup line.

POLITICO Pro: Trump administration proposals seek to eliminate transit funding DOT recently sent two proposals to the White House budget office seeking to pare back transit money.

Trump admin Is attempting to massive cut federal transit funds, seeking to:
1โ€“Eliminate transit account, which funds billions of $ in capital expenses for transit agencies
2โ€“Prevent state DOTs from โ€œflexingโ€ funds for transit

These changes, if they occurred, would be devastating for US transit.

Ratings agencies watch the ratio of debt to taxable value of public entities and downgrade ratings if it gets too high, making it more expensive to service debt. That said, my understanding is that most states bond very conservatively due to decades of neoliberalism from economists
