The movie is deceptively straightforward in its portrayal of the English boarding school’s vicious politics and homosexuality casually accepted yet stigmatized. Colin Firth’s Marxist Tommy Judd is lovely and serious and brittle; and he remains uncompromised and heroic. Also highly recommended

Another Country is another entry in the genre of queers+commies which I desperately need more of (Kiss of the Spider Woman 1985 is the only other example I know). Very young Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Cary Elwes are all delightful in this origin story of the Cambridge Five spy Guy Burgess.

Centerpiece love pentagon features Mark Mckinney, Isabella Rosselini, and Maria de Medeiros who is a nymphomaniac amnesiac with a psychic tapeworm. There are also beer-filled glass prosthetic legs. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and find it. If you have, we should be friends.

Other movies watched this weekend, actually good: Guy Maddin’s The Saddest Music In The World and the absolute fucking banger Another Country (1984). TSMITW is a perfect surreal delight, with Maddin’s typical b&w stop-motion cinematography and ludicrous plot.
