FM buys former IGT building in downtown Providence. What we know.
The 10-story office building on Memorial Boulevard "will serve as a strategic addition to its growing business and global office footprint," FM said.
Sale of ex-IGT building to FM a snapshot of PVD commercial real estate market.
In 2018, building sold for $71M, which is around $92M in 2026 dollars.
$68.5M sale today means property lost nearly a quarter of its pre-pandemic value in real terms

100%. I've talked to the city archivists about grant funding or an arrangement with one of the universities. Just a matter of getting the right people interested.
The map itself is gorgeous even setting aside its historic and transpo value

Much appreciated.
Unfortunately the 1913 map is not digitized.
I was the first person to see it in many years and when we unrolled it in the city archives it began to crack. Needs professional conservation

Providence almost had a subway system 100 years ago. Why it went nowhere
Providence drew up plans as far back as 1913, inspired by the success of Boston's historic subway line. Here's why it never went anywhere.
The subway would have gone from the East Side's Red Bridge to Olneyville - and from North Main St. to Trinity Square in South Providence
It would have cost less in today's dollars than RI is spending to tear down and rebuild half the Washington Bridge

Providence almost had a subway system 100 years ago. Why it went nowhere
Providence drew up plans as far back as 1913, inspired by the success of Boston's historic subway line. Here's why it never went anywhere.
More than a century ago Providence abandoned plans for a 2-line subway system similar to Boston's Green Line.
The decision haunts city and transit experts to this day.

Today T6 Nord tramway opened in Lyon. The project isn't very big (just 5.5 km) but the timeline is just impressive: the project was launched in 2020, 3 years for planning, design, public consultation, permitting and contracting and less than 3 years for construction.

Exploding costs jeopardize fate of new state hospital in Burrillville
The proposed long-term care hospital on the Zambarano Campus in Burrillville was initially expected to cost $108M and is now estimated at $300M.
In 2023 a consultant studied overhauling the Eleanor Slater Hospital system.
Three years later the state has spent $8M on it and designed 90% of the new building.
But costs tripled so McKee administration has rehired the consultant to do another study.

Would-be buyer of ailing RI hospitals pitches lawmakers on $18M backstop
Centurion Foundation hopes to close on the sale of Roger Williams Medical Center and Fatima Hospital by the end of February if $18M backstop is OK'd.
Last night the Centurion Foundation and McKee admin made the case for $18M state backstop on the proposed $87 million CharterCARE bond sale.
The public cost, they said, is much smaller than what Mass. spent on Steward and the cost of receivership
