It's just enough people gone between Xmas and New Year, or for a week in January, to make things feel inconvenient for the terminally huffy and entitled amongst us (same folks who lost their minds that they couldn't go to their baches in lockdown)

Oh, and this drama about summer holidays is of course stupid, but it's not about people having 12 weeks off (because no one does); it's about so many people taking a week here and a week there that it FEELS to them like everyone's disappeared, and rich people want a plumber instantly #nzpol

I would say that the platforms in question were sufficient but not necessary in this case.

Cory Doctorow has done great work on this, and on various steps that could bring them to heel or at least make them subject to competition in the way we usually expect of for-profit companies.

4) By worrying about who gets on the platforms rather than what they allow in general, we sidestep the question of how to make to social media giants accountable more generally. They are the way they are because they're untouchable, and they're untouchable because of specific policy choices.

3) By cutting off access rather than managing content, you also limit the ability of vulnerable youth to get resources around (as an example) gender and sexuality education they might be denied by their parents.

2) Adults aren't just harming themselves, they're poisoning their brains in ways that have broader effects on their communities and sometimes manifest in violence.

Cheers Graeme, I have a couple of responses to that:

1) I think there is absolutely something to the developing brains/developing minds angle, but I think this approach is a mistake. Kids will circumvent the ban, find less scrupulous platforms, or collude with adults to get access.

I mean, they do online. Reasonable enough.

I think the lockdowns *did* prove that, but I think the business bros/flag fuckers/car fuckers etc. really hated Ardern because they don't like a lady telling them what to do *especially* if she says woke words.
