The Best Tactics for Tackling Speeders Drivers who exceed speed limits are the cause of about one-third of all crash deaths in the US. To slow them down and save lives, cities have several effective tools.

Excellent feature from @davidzipper.bsky.social on the huge impact that tackling speeding can have in reducing road casualties in urban areas.

Part of our series "Who’s getting hurt on the roads", this blog looks at who tends to get hurt in drink drive crashes. Analysis shows drink driving is a threat to car occupants but it is not a lead source of harm to active road users, especially not cyclists.

People asked if we should have included the Covid years (2020/21) in this analysis, so revised briefing of where pedestrian and cycling KSIs occur looking at 2024 casualties only. Pattern remains with vast majority of cycling and pedestrian KSIs in urban areas.

In the light of the UK Govt's new Road Safety Strategy, AVZ briefing looks at where pedestrian and cycling KSIs occur (predominantly in urban areas). RSS needs more focus on reducing road danger in urban areas and these v high numbers of KSIs.

New AVZ blog and briefing highlights inconsistencies in sentencing drivers involved in fatal crashes.

It is very rare for drivers to receive long sentences (jailed for nine years or longer) or lifetime driving bans (which were almost never given).

Short AVZ briefing about how well walking, wheeling and cycling are doing in London based on the 2025 Travel In London report.

Good news is growth in the number of cycling trips and the fact that amongst London residents, walking accounts for 38% of all trips.

β€œThe vision should be for zero people to lose their lives” Living Streets comments on the Government's first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade, released today (7 January).

The Road Safety Strategy is an opportunity to address the dangers pedestrians face every day, but the vision should be for zero people to lose their lives. We should not accept that a certain number of people will die on our roads.

Vision Zero plans need to include measures to reduce car use. Delivering the Safe System on its own is not enough; cities also need to reduce driving. The latest AVZ briefing highlights recent research showing that when car use falls casualties fall too.

London needs speeding enforcement to focus more on 20 and 30mph roads. 92% of London's KSIs occur on 20 and 30mph roads but only 58% of its speed enforcement does.Β If it was proportionate, there would be another 280,000 speeding offences detected on these roads.
