This thread is πŸ’―. Labor precarity in academia means the evisceration of faculty governance and academic freedom, opening the door to administrative purges of the most vulnerable. And faculty-esp tenured faculty and academic leaders-who aren't defending their trans colleagues are enabling it.

Tired: saying people today aren't reading capably

Wired: sharing annotations & close readings publicly so interpretations are connected to evidence

Inspired: sharing social media hatereadings of reactionary screeds as a way of enticing people to connect interpretations to evidence to consequences

periodic reminder of the existence of Atkinson Hyperlegible, a free font available from the Braille Institute designed to improve readability for people with low vision

I use it in talks because it's pretty and also because, as an audience member, I am perpetually squinting at people's slides

just in case anybody thought the 'AI everywhere' campaign was anything but a flagrant consolidation of power

(also literally unconstitutional)

Honestly, this makes every org and institution that folded at the merest threat of an attack on trans rights just look as pathetic as they are.

It does the same for everyone that excused them.

"It’s clear that schools have become a battleground for AI companies who desperately want to get their product ingrained into as many institutions as possible...they are rich sources of unique data that can be used to train models...& many of them have massive budgets & rarely ditch a service"

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

β€œHype is seldom based on concrete promises,” explains Stewart. β€œIt is, by design, a speculation boom: it generates a narrative of innovation and future value, but it is driven by logics of business and media, not education or the public good. Hype’s purpose is to generate investment.”

The common good is a set of shared commitments.

To the rule of law. To democracy. To tolerance. To equal opportunity. To upholding the truth.

We cannot have a functioning society without these shared commitments.

What goes up must come down: Education prof explores the AI hype cycle

my campus news put out a piece on the 'AI hype awareness' work i've been doing lately, from a higher ed perspective.

we need to understand that we are being sold a bail-out for billionaires, not an educational future.

The logic of algorithms tends to repeat what β€œworks,” but art opens up what is possible. Not everything has to be immediate or predictable. Defend slowness when it serves a purpose, silence when it speaks and difference when evocative. Beauty is not just a means of escape; it is, above all, an invocation. When cinema is authentic, it does not merely console but challenges. It articulates the questions that dwell within us and sometimes even provokes tears that we did not know we needed to express.

Pope Leo XIV understands technology and its relationship to art better any executive or AI-pilled techbro running the conference circuit.

Preprint w/ (rapid) analysis of Grokipedia, showing it to be β€œhighly derivative of Wikipedia”, but differing, often on controversial topics, in that Grokipedia includes content/cites from low quality (hyper partisan & conspiracy laden) sources like Stormfront & Infowars. arxiv.org/pdf/2511.09685

Canada loses its measles elimination status β€” as it happened | CBC

Misinformation is harmless, they say, it's just a different POV they say ... "Canada has lost its measles elimination status, the Public Health Agency of Canada says. Since the fall of 2024, Canada has recorded more than 5k measles cases in 9 provinces and one territory." www.cbc.ca/news/health/...

We need this to penetrate public consciousness.

Sooner or later they come hat in hand to govt. They will tell SNAP recipients to β€œget a job.” To billionaires peddling an idea no one needs, they open the coffers filled with our tax dollars.

This Virginia Election Was a Warning for Data Centers John McAuliff ran his campaign almost entirely on data centers β€” and won.

Did you know a former White House climate advisor flipped a GOP stronghold in Virginia by running entirely on putting a stop to more AI data centers?

For @heatmap.news I profiled John McAuliff and a campaign that will be a roadmap for all future anti-AI politicians moving forward.

Briefing: Grokipedia applies a right-wing filter to Wikipedia Plus: an easy way to search for objects within a video and a new web reconnaissance tool

"The question is whether Grokipedia can succeed not as an alternative to Wikipedia but as a means to delegitimize it. 'Flooding the zone with shit' ... doesn’t necessarily seek to replace institutions of collective knowledge generation; it seeks to deface them."

I tend to agree with this. If AI works like its cheerleaders claim/hope it will - replacing whole swathes of human labour - then they need a real economic plan for dealing with the consequences of that. This can only mean heavily redistributing the profits.
