when i started watching these with @gmad.bsky.social i was puzzled by her admission to having watched every one of these movies once, except the dark knight, which she’d seen about a half-dozen times. was it just that much better? astoundingly. the others are like benign tumours hanging off it

and it’s really fucking weird, because the dark knight has nearly nothing to do with batman begins and is hardly relevant to rises. it’s basically just a standalone movie sandwiched between a duology of bad ideas

having now finished the nolan trilogy of batman films i am mostly gobsmacked that like. one of them is any good? and it’s the middle one?? what an unusual project

i feel The Dark Knight works because nolan, intentionally or otherwise, realizes he can have it both ways: it's a crime thriller with comic book villains that don't need most of their deal stripped out. it works so much better than insisting on the immortal assassin guy being a regular human

a weird guy starts a bizarre war against theoretically normal opponents: mob bosses, police corruption, random crooks. regular crime thriller stuff until it suddenly isn't, because reality keeps generating impossible villains. aliens exist. magic becomes real. batman, once the outlier, is now normal

i've been watching nolan's batman movies, somehow for the very first time, and my major takeaway is that most attempts to do this type of adaptation have missed the point: the "serious" frank miller image of the character is only good if all the outlandish batman shit eventually happens around it

a cancelled half-life 2 mod, though i'm curious if you want to buy the model itself or one like it lmao

maybe you want something low-fi built with an immense understanding of what makes that type of work interesting or appealing, or maybe you want something more detailed that still achieves a remarkable level of stylization. typical stuff, furry stuff, anime stuff, unsettling stuff... all good stuff
